DriverTeamsters Local 728 Film Crew May 2014 - PresentGeorgiaAfter logging more than 750,000 miles in non-commercial vehicles, putting my CDL to use in the film industry was a natural segue after working as a Set Dresser for IATSE Local 479 on a number of film and television productions.As a Class A Commercial Driver in the film industry, with endorsements for HAZMAT, Doubles/Triples, and Tankers, my responsibilities can run the gamut from simply getting an Actor or Director to and from set in a private SUV, to as intense as rolling down the jam packed Atlanta highways at 65MPH in an 80,000lb ten speed manual with a fully loaded 53' trailer floating up behind me.Some people find uncertainty stressful; I enjoy always being at the ready for whatever the windshield might bring into focus that day. Add to that, who wouldn't want to work in the film industry? I haven't met anyone on set yet who'd rather be anywhere else.

Little else can explain how I obtained membership in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees almost overnight. In November 2012 Killing Winston Jones, starring Danny Glover, Danny Masterson and Richard Dreyfuss, shot in Savannah, GA.As a local Actor at the time, I auditioned for a minor role, but was passed over. However, since it was an independent film, and few local crew members were willing to work the days between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I was hired on as Leadman -- the one in charge of making sure the sets on a film are dressed properly and/or directing the swing gang to do so.A few days into production, the show "flipped" and went union, and I was immediately granted admission into the IATSE Local 491. Many people work tirelessly for years before building up enough time to apply for membership in the union, so I am incredibly grateful for my good fortune.While I have shifted my focus to driving for the film industry as often as possible, I remain a dues paying and card carrying IATSE Local 479 member, which means I remain available to work for/with my wife, a Production Designer with the ADG Local 800, should she ever need me.
