Southeast And East Asia

Designed and managed programs for conservation of regional biodiversity, both terrestrial and marine. Coordinated activities with USAID’s bilateral Missions in Asia and USAID Washington, as well as with representatives from other USG agencies, regional organizations, national and local governments, the private sector, civil society, and donor organizations. Programs designed and managed to incorporate gender equality and social inclusion every step of the way. Served in leadership positions for USAID activities to (1) fight wildlife trafficking (e.g., the US$ 25,000,000 USAID Wildlife Asia) and (2) support sustainable fishing (e.g., the US$ 20,000,000 USAID Oceans and Fisheries Partnership). Worked with multiple stakeholders to develop and initiate the next generation of USAID's biodiversity programming (e.g., USAID End Wildlife Crime, USAID Sustainable Fish Asia / Technical Support). Involved in all aspects of the program cycle, from strategic planning, to program design, to project implementation, to monitoring, evaluation, and learning.

Washington Dc

Spearheaded WWF's work in the U.S. to protect forests and other biodiversity in Borneo and Sumatra. Developed overarching strategy for engagement, in alignment with WWF’s international agenda and in partnership with WWF Indonesia and WWF Malaysia. Coordinated a diverse group of technical experts delivering U.S. contributions to offices in Indonesia and Malaysia. Served as U.S. focal point for WWF management teams in Indonesia and Malaysia. Served on advisory board for WWF Heart of Borneo Global Initiative.

Bogor, Indonesia

Provided consulting services via PT Hatfield Indonesia, an environmental firm in Bogor, Indonesia. Primary client was WWF Indonesia’s program for forests, freshwater and terrestrial species. Developed funding strategies and cultivated donors. Served as core member of WWF teams raising over U.S. $15,000,000. Also provided consulting services to Tropical Forest Conservation Action Sumatera (TFCA Sumatera), with formal evaluation of a U.S. $30,000,000 debt-for-nature swap between the U.S. State Department and the Government of Indonesia.

Hong Kong

Led 14 staff in four offices (Beijing, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Taipei) for design and delivery of conservation research to prevent illegal trade and promote sustainable trade in natural resources. Geographic responsibility: China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Mongolia. Directed strategic planning, work programming, and fundraising. Established office in China, grown to six full-time staff, all Chinese nationals. Established marine program. Shifted program orientation from restrictive and regulatory toward pro-poor approaches, such as livelihood development through sustainable trade in plant medicines. Brought together the four offices of TRAFFIC East Asia, moving from country projects to regional programs.

Kunming, Yunnan, China

Led biodiversity research program for conservation and development project covering 66,000 km2 of northwest Yunnan. Coordinated work of 25 professionals on teams from nine agencies, including the Kunming Institute of Zoology, the Yunnan Department of Forestry, and the Center for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge. Resulted in biodiversity module of Northwest Yunnan Conservation & Development Plan, officially adopted by the Yunnan Provincial Planning Commission.

Sichuan, China

Designed and conducted ecological research for conservation planning for the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey Rhinopithecus roxellana in Sichuan, China. Led and mentored research team. In partnership with the Sichuan Department of Forestry. Post-doctoral fellowship from the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Sacramento, California

Analyzed state budget and other bills for the financial implications of natural resource policy and environmental protection. Responsible for oversight of 12 departments with annual budgets totaling U.S. $1,500,000,000.
