As co-founder and CEO of Buildings Alive, I lead a company that provides world-class technology to help buildings go beyond 'net' zero emissions and operate carbon-free, 24/7.In previous roles I pioneered commercial real estate sustainability programs, 'green' leasing structures, sustainability / ESG reporting, and data analytics for building performance optimization. Why? Because buildings are responsible for approximately 30% of global energy consumption, 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, about 50% of all electricity consumption and, on average, 50% of emissions in major cities - and they are where most of us spend most of our time. Over the period 1990-2019, global CO2-e emissions from buildings increased by 50%. Fortunately, in most parts of the world, cutting carbon means cutting costs - so we can move fast if we work together.
