My work involved categorizing and annotating an online database with over 100 publicly available, web-based tools and resources to help fisheries managers accomplish the goals of the Marine Life Management Act (MLMA), California’s primary fisheries management law. I actively consult with individuals from state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and academic institutions to seek stakeholder input and obtain the best available scientific information. In addition, I provide 10 hours/week of ad-hoc research assistance writing policy memos for California fisheries management and enforcement, analyzing state and federal climate change policy, and synthesizing the impacts of California's Marine Protected Area (MPA) network.

I am one of only 15 individuals to specialize in the identification, enumeration, and measurement of over 200 species of deep-sea coral, sponge, and fish from the West Coast of the United States. I analyzed over 700 hours of video data recorded by Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) in the Channel Islands, Monterey Bay, Cordell Bank, and Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuaries. I managed several databases in Microsoft Access and Excel, and performed data analysis and QA/QC to monitor changes in deep-sea coral, sponge, and fish populations before and after essential fish habitat closures to support policy and management decisions for national marine sanctuaries. I performed field survey methods to monitor seasonal changes in native and nonnative fish populations, and water quality metrics for the Yolo Bypass Fish Monitoring Program’s long-term database. I collaborated with state and federal agencies on multiple research projects related to fish conservation, water quality assessment, and water resource management in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. I co-managed a continuous water quality monitoring assessment using a suite of eight YSI water-quality instruments throughout several study sites for the mandated 2019 North Delta Flow Action. For two consecutive Delta Smelt Enclosure Studies (2018 and 2019), I assessed habitat suitability for the introduction of hatchery raised Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) to eutrophic environments in the north delta. I also managed comprehensive databases in Microsoft Access following QA/QC protocols for biological assessments of fish populations and trends in lower trophic and water quality.

I secured a Secret-level Security Clearance and supported the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program with advanced scuba diving, veterinary procedures, and tactical dolphin training. I was in charge of maintaining a fleet of 4 military vessels and used GPS navigation to conduct classified boating operations and animal transportations in and out of San Diego Bay, CA.

I managed the program logistics for three overnight science programs designed to educate classes of 20+ students in deep-sea ecology, underwater seismology, and watershed science. I revised the underwater seismology curriculum following Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to improve the program’s facilitation of triangulation and seismic monitoring processes. I communicated with teachers and parents daily to ensure a safe, positive and educational environment for their students and children.
