Principal DesignerSyverson Labs Jan 2006 - Jul 2024Palo Alto, Ca, New York, Ny And Los Angeles, CaFor the times when I wasn't employed as staff, I've worked freelance, providing design and product related services over a range of industries. This page shows a selection portfolio examples and/or descriptions of those projects I am at liberty to share. Some contained finished work, some are in-process documents that shows how I work, and what you can expect from me as a client or as an employer. As is somewhat typical of most of my career, a large portion of the work I’ve done remains confidential, as per the agreements made with my clients at the outset of my engagement. -
Interim Head Of DesignLev Apr 2019 - Oct 2019Rotterdam, NetherlandsI was the Interim Head of Design for this novel electric vehicle sharing service that launched in Rotterdam in July 2019. My responsibilities encompassed all aspects of graphic design (print and screen) and UX design that a new company requires, as well as acting as the lead creative for our early marketing efforts. -
Senior User Experience DesignerApple Inc. Jul 2011 - Apr 2015Cupertino, CaSenior UX Designer for design team that developed internal enterprise software for Apple Inc. I led a number of projects that are implemented internally within the company. I did some of my best work here, and overall it was an amazing and rewarding experience. I also have a deep respect for Apple's confidentiality policy, so as much as I would like to, I will not share examples of this work publicly or privately. What I can share are some generalities. I led design teams of a wide range of apps, from data intensive, enterprise-level applications to converting former desktop applications to the iPhone and iPad platforms. I led the product ideation and all UX of a major, brand-new application from the onset of the project to its completion. From a process perspective, I can also share I used my Keynote skills to rapidly prototype credible UX flow screens in order to quickly gain consensus on a design idea. I also incorporated Apple Numbers in some prototypes (yes, the spreadsheet program) and Apple Motion for animations that were beyond the scope of Keynote. -
Creative DirectorThe Lobby Conference Jan 2007 - Oct 2011Menlo Park, CaFounding Creative Director of The Lobby Conference, a private annual event for business leaders in digital media and venture capital. David Hornik, with whom I was co-hosting our podcast "VentureCast," conceived the conference and asked me to join him in polishing out the final details of the experience of the conference and provide creative direction and brand identity. For the first five years of the conference, I also designed and produced all the branded swag, signage and printed materials. This work is one of which I am most proud. The logo I designed was actually in two orientations, horizontal and vertical, to better integrate it within the context of its placement. As David wanted each year's conference to have a sub-theme, I set the branding guidelines accordingly, making them flexible enough to allow for the theme to influence the look of the brand rather than vice-versa. The confernence is in its 17th year and still going strong. -
User Experience DesignerYahoo! Oct 2009 - Jun 2011Sunnyvale, CaI worked in the Apps Group as a User Experience Architect, where I developed new product concepts and built experiential prototypes to help communicate and evaluate the viability of potential future products and services, and how they fit within Yahoo’s overall design strategy. My focus was on the integration of outside social media services (Facebook, Twitter) as well as on internal communications tools (Mail, Messenger, etc.) for both desktop and mobile platforms. As this work was creating new intellectual property for the company and was frequently submitted for patents, I am not able to share examples. -

Design LeadBitmenu, Inc. May 2008 - Jun 2009Palo Alto, Cabitmenu was a start-up company looking to provide the bourgeoning podcast producers a way to charge their audience small amounts of money per episode. At the time of its inception, (and long before Patreon existed) there were no credible ways that amateur producers could do this. The company contacted me after seeing my gruntmedia work and asked me to work with them as Design Lead. Given that I was seeking exactly such a service, I was enthusiastic to get it launched (I did not want to generate revenue from advertising). Since I also had experience in other fields, such as branding and UX, it was a good fit.

Founding Media Discipline LeadIdeo 1995 - 2005Palo Alto, CaI conceived and lead IDEO's in-house media production division, which is currenlty called the Storytelling Discipline. We focussed on creating short videos to help clients understand our how design ideas would manifest in the final product, and how they might be experienced by the user in terms of both function and feeling. I coined the term “video prototype" to describe this work. While I managed group of videographers and an in-house production and photography studio, I also performed all aspects of video production, from concept to shooting to distribution. I reported directly to CEO and kept the division in the black from the first year. Our group was also responsible for all internally-created media representations of IDEO and worked directly with the Marketing and Communications group on the strategic direction of the company brand. We also produced promotional videos for annual design awards competition, providing a key element that enabled IDEO to reach the #1 position every year.
