I’ve always had two main hobbies; origami and puzzles. These hobbies I do to this day have helped me become the software engineer I am today in the following ways:-Details-Folding origami has helped me recognize and look for details. A fold that you do in a step may not seem necessary for many steps. Likewise in software development missing a requirement or process early on can cause unforeseeable problems in the future.-Creativity-I’ve learned through puzzle solving that there are often multiple ways to solve a problem. This awareness has helped me to evaluate multiple solutions for a problem and find the pros and cons of each solution. It has also helped me realize that the way I choose to solve a problem is not always the best way.-Focus-With both origami and puzzles a certain level of focus is needed. Similarly a software engineer has to be able to focus for periods of time in a fast, busy and often distracting workplace.-Perseverance- Dedication to follow through with an origami model of several hundred steps takes perseverance, I may have to redo or refine certain folds but I feel a sense of accomplishment when the model is completed. A software engineer also has to have perseverance to be able to complete projects. -Teaching-Often when people see the origami models I make they ask how I do it. I often reply as a joke, "You just keep on folding till you’re done." While it is more complicated than that, at the same time it is not. I enjoy teaching people how to follow origami instructions so that they also can take a flat sheet of paper and make something unbelievable. I bring this same attitude to my workplace. I believe that sharing knowledge and experience brings the team together and elevates it.I enjoy bringing all these attributes to my newest lifelong hobby and career of being a software engineer. I continue to learn and grow as I become exposed to new techniques, colleagues, projects and technologies.
