Programme Manager East, Central And Southern Africa

London, United Kingdom

This Africa position at ZSL was one that had not been filled for some time. It was one of two Africa regional positions that reported directly to the head of regional programmes. There were three main areas of focus. The first was Kenya and guiding the relatively new country manager in setting up the country office. The second was our withdrawal from a rather large and complex project in the DRC which ZSL had decided was no longer worth the risk, lastly I was tasked with expanding ZSL’s programme in Africa. I spent my first month in London for induction on ZSL systems, then a month in Kenya with the country manager scoping various options particularly in and around Tsavo National Park. The outcome was the foundation of a good country strategy focused initially around a Tsavo landscape for five years. This ultimately led to creation of the ‘Rhino Bond’ concept of which I was one key author. This concept has become a major funding source for ZSL in the Tsavo landscape. Our discussions formed the foundation of a later IWT proposal with Defra that is funding a substantial part of ZSL’s work in Kenya. In Kenya I connected the new country manager with the SMART development group and with the team responsible for working on the Green List of Protected Areas in Kenya. After Kenya I was based in South Africa for six months as part of my arrangement with ZSL where I began reaching out to contacts in Southern Africa for possible opportunities for ZSL. Some of this work resulted in collaboration with Hluluwe/ Umfolosi Rhino Reserve in the Rhino Bond assessments, it also led to training in use of the Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) with the Game Rangers Association in Africa (GRAA) in South Africa. Before I returned to London I was appointed Senior Programme Manager for Asia.
