About Craig Wheelock

I am a chemist who employs a combination of analytical and computational chemistry to explore the nature of Health. My long-term research interests involve using systems biology-based approaches to explore the mechanisms involved in maintaining healthy populations – both at the individual as well as group level. Research in my laboratory employs high-resolution mass spectrometry to perform molecular phenotyping of individuals in response to disease or environmental stressors. These efforts are combined with multivariate statistical modeling and network construction to identify biochemical pathways associated with specific sub-phenotypes towards the twin goals of 1) understanding the etiology of disease processes and 2) identifying markers of the onset as well as resolution of system-based stress.

Developing mass spectrometry-based lipidomics applications to probe mechanisms of inflammatory-related diseases. Current efforts are focused on obstructive lung disease. Our group is also interested in metabolic pathway reconstruction and network analysis.
  • Karolinska Institutet
    Assistant Professor
    Karolinska Institutet May 2007 - Mar 2009
Developed mass spectrometry-based methods for quantification of oxylipids.
  • Karolinska Institutet
    Senior Researcher
    Karolinska Institutet Apr 2006 - Apr 2007
Developed methods for examining hypervariable antigenic proteins in the malaria parasite. These approaches have been collected into the varDB database in collaboration with the Kyoto University Bioinformatics Center (http://www.vardb.org/).
  • Gunma University
    Distinguished Visiting Professor Of Metabolomics
Gunma University Apr 2015 - Present
    Gunma, Japan
Founded the first Karolinska Institutet International Laboratory. Research in the group is focused on developing novel technologies to perform highthroughput molecular phenotyping. A particular emphasis of our work is to understand the role that environmental and dietary exposures play in disease etiology in our efforts to identify a quantitative description of Health.
  • European Respiratory Society
Director Of Scientific Relations With The Eu
European Respiratory Society May 2020 - Sep 2023
Appointed to increase awareness and visibility among EU policy and decision makers of European Respiratory Society expertise and positions and, to communicate the needs of the respiratory research and science community to EU policy and decision makers and other stakeholders.
  • University Of California, Berkeley
    Visiting Scholar
University Of California, Berkeley Aug 2018 - Aug 2019
    Berkeley
Working with Prof. Stephen Rappaport to understand the role of gene x environment interactions in obstructive lung disease.
  • Kyoto University
    Visiting Associate Professor
    Kyoto University Oct 2010 - Jan 2011
Visiting Associate Professor in the Division of Applied Life Sciences. My time there included continuing my research activities on structure-function relationship studies on carboxylesterase enzymes and their interactions with agrochemicals and subsequent effects upon lipid metabolism. We also continued to expand our research efforts in Systems Biology at the Kyoto University Bioinformatics Center (KEGG), to elucidate mechanisms in inflammatory diseases, with a focus on asthma. Activities also included guest lecturing and a series of career development seminars with graduate students.
  • Kyoto University
    Researcher
    Kyoto University Sep 2004 - Apr 2006
Post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Chemical Research. Developed bioinformatic approaches to analyze metabolomics data. Specifically focused on the effects of PPARa agonists upon lipid metabolite profiles. Conducted research into insecticide development using ecdysone agonists. Studies employed 3-D QSAR analysis of insect molting hormone activity using a cell-based high-throughput screen.
  • Uc Davis
    Researcher
    Uc Davis Feb 2003 - Sep 2004
Examined the effects of lipid mediators (PPARa and PPARg agonists) and agrochemical precursors upon oxylipid and structural lipid metabolism using metabolomics approaches. Developed Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) procedures for pyrethroid insecticides. Results were used to implement novel methods for pyrethroid detection in receiving waters.
  • Kyoto University
    Researcher
    Kyoto University Oct 2002 - Jan 2003
Conducted post-doctoral studies in the Division of Applied Life Sciences. Research involved using classical and 3-D QSAR models to examine the inhibition mechanism of the carboxylesterase enzyme juvenile hormone esterase by trifluoromethyl ketone (TFK) inhibitors.
