Chiamaka Rita Akpuogwu is a multidisciplinary professional with expertise at the intersection of law, migration, and gender equality. She is currently a Researcher at Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany, where she earned her European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) with distinction. She also holds a Law degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.Her professional experience spans continents and thematic areas. At the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Czechia, she supported the integration of Ukrainian refugees, aligning her efforts with European and global migration policies. In Norway, she contributed to the University of Stavanger’s research project, Exhuming Immigrant Voices from the Past: A Critical Archival Study of the Bancroft Library, a collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley. This project, which explored immigrants' lived experiences and addressed critical gaps in documenting marginalised communities, resulted in her contribution to a book chapter.Chiamaka has also championed capacity-building initiatives for migrants in Germany through her work with the Diaspora Narrative Initiative e.V. In Nigeria, she partnered with organisations like JDPC Lagos, heading their Legal, Migration, and Gender Mainstreaming Departments. Her roles included offering pro bono legal support, reintegrating returnees, and promoting gender equality. Additionally, she was instrumental in the Web of Hearts Foundation’s GIZ-funded Pro-Poor Growth and Promotion of Employment in Nigeria (SEDIN) project, training returnees, internally displaced persons, and persons with disabilities in entrepreneurship and economic empowerment. Through these initiatives, beneficiaries gained essential skills like crafting business plans, CV development, and confidently pitching ideas to stakeholders.As a gender equality advocate, Chiamaka analyses the intersection of gender and migration to foster inclusivity and prosperity. She also actively leads gender equality campaigns. Her work with the Society for Women and Girls in Distress (SoWoGiDi), the Nigerian project of SOLWODI Germany, focused on supporting the reintegration of female victims of trafficking from Germany and advancing gender justice. A co-founder and chairperson of Blank Pages Global, a Germany-based organisation promoting peace and dialogue through creative expression, Chiamaka remains committed to driving meaningful change. Her passion lies in advancing a just and equitable world for all.
