As Tech Lead and Principal at ThoughtWorks, I was technical leader on a £139m Business Transformation Programme at the Student Loans Company (SLC). ThoughtWorks was the appointed technical transformation partner.I provided hands-on change leadership and technical expertise to support SLC’s transition from traditional enterprise into a fast moving, digital first business. This included the adoption of lean and agile approaches, Continuous Delivery, DevOps, product orientation, technology strategy and enterprise architecture.SLC became the first Government Agency to meet the Digital by Default Service Standard, and is now recognised as a customer-focussed, leading-edge technology organisation.As a long-time follower of ThoughtWork’s highly respected Technology Radar, it was a personal highlight to contribute towards the Jan 2015 edition by participating in workshops on the technology and trends shaping the future of our industry.

Developing Aridhia's flagship AnalytixAgility platform allowed me to work with an exceptional team in a high-paced, technically challenging, product oriented environment.Designed for petabyte scale data volumes, AnalytixAgility is a cloud-based data analysis platform built on OpenChorus, Greenplum and Hadoop to deliver a research safe haven for biomedical research, precision medicine and healthcare.During this time, I identified a gap in the market for an intelligent image analysis platform. Medical imaging accounts for approx. 30% of the growing world-wide data storage. But this growth is not mirrored by an increase in the Clinical Radiologist expertise needed to analyse and interpret these images for diagnostic insight. The global market for medical imaging systems estimated at $30.2 billion, and is projected to rise to $49 billion by 2020.I presented a business plan to Aridhia’s founder and CEO, David Sibbald, for an intelligent image analysis platform to automate the review of diagnostic radiology imaging. I went on to secure government funding for the venture from the Technology Strategy Board (now Innovate UK) and collaborate with Edinburgh University.

As Lead Consultant in the Advanced Microsoft Consultancy wing of Charteris, I provided clients with hands-on technology leadership, led the adoption of agile principles and drove development and delivery with Microsoft technologies. Charteris Plc. was widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading transformation and technology consultancies for enterprise and mid-market organisations.Most prominently I worked with Scottish Life, the pensions specialist arm of the Royal London Group, on the development of an auto-enrolment pensions platform. The Pensions Act 2008 stipulates that every employer in the UK must auto-enroll eligible staff into a pension scheme and contribute towards it.I worked with Scottish Life to build an online service that enables employers to meet their obligations and employees to manage their enrolment preferences. The platform later a became a key enabler for partnering with with the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST), to enable advisers to offer an integrated automatic enrolment solution to their clients.

Leading a passionate team of clinical integration specialists at Clevermed, we pioneered a solution for single patient care records across connected UK hospitals. Real-time integration with other clinical systems and medical devices was essential to form this electronic record, and operated in over 250 hospitals.Clevermed’s flagship product, BadgerNet, uses this single patient record to exchange information in real time across healthcare units, Trusts, Health Boards, and Regions for the specialist areas of maternity, neonatology and paediatric intensive care.Working closely with hospital clinical and IT specialists, I led the technical design, development and operation of clinical integrations. These integrations handled massive volumes of patient data including demographics, pathology/radiology results and real-time clinical data from cot-side devices such as ventilators and infusion pumps.Our work was later extended to include Mater Mothers’ Hospitals in Australia. The video below, from ABC News Queensland, highlighted the impact of our work and introduced the era of paperless clinical environments through adoption of BadgerNet.
