As an Animal Health Assistant, I preform an initial evaluation of a client’s (pets) condition, including taking vitals, assessing general appearance and body condition. To prepare the clinic for appointments, I ensure lab and exam equipment is in good working order, supplies are stocked, and the exam rooms are cleaned. I gather a verbal history from the owner, any new or existing conditions that might be present and present the initial findings to the Veterinarian before their exam. Based on the Veterinarian’s assessment, I am delegated to collect blood, urine, fecal and other lab samples to be tested in-hours or package them to send to an outside laboratory. Along with my military counterparts, Army Animal Care Specialist (68T), we support one another and our Veterinarians by assisting one another for exams, lab collections and minor procedures. I also fill medications for both over-the-counter and prescription medications and supplements.On surgery days, I would prep the surgery suite, prep client for surgery by placing a catheter, and administering ore-surgery anesthetics, per the Veterinarian’s instruction. When needed during surgery, I monitor the patient’s anesthesia level, temperature, pulse and respiration rate. I always use best practice to safely restrain clients, when needed, to preform tests, exams and prepare for surgery. After appointments or surgery, I provide the Veterinarian’s discharge instructions and recommendations, along with checking out the owner and collecting payment. To assure the clinic runs smoothly, I also assist in answering phone calls, respond to emails, schedule appointments, communicate with other facilities, and order lab collection supplies.
