Si è occupato dello sviluppo di software per l’acquisizione dati e per il controllo di apparati presso il Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud (Catania), facendo parte della collaborazione internazionale GRAAL (Grenoble Anneau Accelerateur Laser). Tale collaborazione svolge la sua attività di presa dati in Grenoble (Francia) presso l’ERSF (European Radiation Synchrotron Facility), dove ha realizzato un fascio di fotoni di energie comprese tra 400 e 1500 MeV. L’esperimento GRAAL si avvale del supporto dell’INFN, dell’IN2P3 (Francia) e dell’INR (Russia). I sistemi operativi in uso, di tipo OS9 ed UNIX, non prevedono generalmente la programmazione ad oggetti, come assicurata adesso da applicazioni basate sul linguaggio C++, attivo sotto diversi sistemi operativi; in tale direzione di sviluppo l’Ing. Randieri lavora sia per potenziare i programmi di acquisizione esistenti all’interno del gruppo GRAAL, sia per la migrazione verso il sistema operativo VxWorks, vista la sua esperienza di programmazione ad oggetti ed in collaborazione con il gruppo di acquisizione dati LNS. Parallelamente a ciò occorre predisporre dei programmi di monitoraggio e controllo dei più svariati dispositivi a funzionamento automatizzato, programmi che possono essere eseguiti adoperando PC ovvero Macintosh in ambiente LabView, ovvero implementando applicativi che utilizzano PLC controllati da un PC mediante protocolli a bus di campo, come ad es. il profibus, di cui l’ Ing. Randieri ha esperienza diretta, avendo già lavorato alla realizzazione di un progetto di movimentazione remota di un multirivelatore di NaI per esperimenti di interferometria presso LNS con i fasci del CS. L’attività di ricerca riguarda la progettazione di sistemi intelligenti tramite tecniche di soft computing per il monitoraggio di macchinari di precisione mirati alla realizzazione di farmaci a rilascio controllato facilmente veicolabili.

Stage finalizzato allo studio, progettazione e ottimizzazione di un sistema per la conta di cellule animali mediante l'utilizzo di tecniche di intelligenza artificiale basate sulle reti neurali cellulari (Cellular Neural Networks, CNN). Più precisamente:- studio e progettazione di un simulatore neurale cellulare per la conta di cellule animali;- realizzazione di un prototipo per l'acquisizione di immagini dal microscopio;- analisi dei risultati e confronto con le tecniche attualmente adoperate per tale scopo;- studio di una possibile ottimizzazione delle varie parti del progetto.I risultati di questa attività, condotta in collaborazione con i ricercatori della ABRES s.r.l. e del DEES (Dipartimento Elettrico Elettronico Sistemistico) della facoltà di ingegneria dell'Università degli studi di Catania è stata oggetto di una comunicazione accettata al congresso "1998 IEEE CONFERENCE ON CONTROL APPLICATION'​ che ha avuto luogo a Trieste a partire dal I'​ Settembre 1998. Inoltre è stata svolto lavoro di ricerca mirato allo sviluppo di nuove applicazioni del Soft Computing nel campo biotecnologico.Coordinatori: Prof Giuseppe Nunnari docente di CONTROLLI AUTOMATICI presso la facoltà di ingegneria dell'Università degli studi di Catania, Prof Victor Rizza docente di CHIMICA E PROPEDEUTICA BIOCHIMICA presso la facoltà di medicina e chirurgia dell'Università degli studi di Catania.

Stage finalizzato allo studio, progettazione e ottimizzazione di un sistema per estrazione con fluidi supercritici (SCF, con tecniche RESS) mediante l'utilizzo di tecniche di intelligenza artificiale basate su Soft Computing. Più precisamente:- studio e progettazione di un sistema neurale per la simulazione del sistema SCF e relativa ottimizzazione dei parametri di progetto;- studio e progettazione di un sistema fuzzy basato su tecniche hardware per il controllo di sottosistemi del processo SCF quali ad esempio il controllo di temperatura dei bagni termici;- studio di un possibile approccio mediante reti neurali cellulari (CNN) per l'analisi dei risultati.- studio di una possibile ottimizzazione mediante algoritmi genetici delle varie parti del progetto esposte.Tale progetto è tuttora al vaglio di una possibile realizzazione su scala industriale con relativo brevetto internazionale. Stage finalizzato alla progettazione ed alla realizzazione di un sistema di controllo distribuito basato su rete di comunicazione Profibus. Più precisamente il sistema di controllo è finalizzato al controllo remoto di un apparato elettromeccanico di movimentazione a tre gradi di libertà per il posizionamento micrometrico di un complesso di rivelatori a cristalli di CsI per la rivelazione di protoni (chiamato EMRIC). Il lavoro è stato svolto sui seguenti argomenti:-studio e progettazione di una rete PROFIBUS per il posizionamento da remoto di EMRIC;-progettazione e realizzazione dell’interfaccia elettronica di comunicazione tra la rete e la logica di controllo remota;-sviluppo del software di interfaccia grafica (SCADA) per terminale remoto;-ottimizzazione di tale sistema in termini di efficienza e affidabilità.Coordinatori: Prof. Orazio Mirabella, docente di Reti di Calcolatori presso la Facoltà di Ingegneria dell’Università degli studi di Catania, Prof. Vincenzo Bellini docente di Fisica Generale presso la Facoltà di Scienze dell’Università degli Studi di Catania e responsabile INFN dell’esperimento di interferometria nucleare denominato CHIC presso il Laboratorio Nazionale del Sud di Catania.
