About Michael Renz

I am a generalist. I work with software, hardware, networking, as well as metalworking, woodworking, chemistry, biology, electronics - anything I can get my hands on, really.I have goals. Some of these goals include constructing my own lasers, etc. and testing them in DoE tunnels, but they're still goals. I do not believe that this little box could list the hierarchy of my goals properly.I don't care about money. I don't care about credit. I don't care about having a cellphone, or if Britney got a haircut, or when and where the next party is. There's a very high probability that you will never meet me in public. I have better stuff to do on my own, like researching on how to map and block Tor networks, or running a better ground around here so that the power conditioners I use for my comp and audio equipment actually work well. How are these related to my professional experience and goals? Well, they make up a very large picture of who I am. Wherever I work, it should be understood that you can't offer me more money to get me to do something differently - I put a very high value on a logical discussion, and will sacrifice my time out of work to learn more about the subject matter if necessary.Specialties: I originally had a long and precise descriptive of my views on "specialties" here. Alas, this box is only 500 characters long, and my descriptive 744. Boxes, boxes....everywhere.:p

  • Barnes & Noble
    Linux Systems Administrator
    Barnes & Noble Feb 2011 - Jun 2013
I like puppet and xen...but they weren't enough by themselves, so now I've gotten familiar with openstack, too.Oh, and infiniband.
  • Lime Wire, Llc
    Operations Engineer
Lime Wire, Llc Jun 2010 - Feb 2011
    I like ZFS.
  • Conductor, Inc.
    System Engineer
    Conductor, Inc. 2009 - 2010
I worked with Zenoss and Bacula, and learned some methods that some of my coding experience could be applied to systems administration.
  • Contextweb
    Qa Analyst
    Contextweb Dec 2007 - Dec 2008
Created a test suite in perl, php, and sql for their backend environments that turned the regression process into a 7 minute job, from 2 weeks of work. Worked directly with developers, account managers, traffic experts and management to reduce the time needed to test the backend platform, as well as to increase the tolerance of results.
  • X+1
    Qa Analyst
    X+1 Jan 2006 - Mar 2007
QA Analyst - I coded a lot of perl automation stuff. Besides that, documentation and other utilities.
  • Viewpoint, Inc.
    Qa Analyst
    Viewpoint, Inc. Jan 2005 - Oct 2005
Semi-memorable job - got to test a pretty cool Web/3d design prog named Enliven(aka Bonfire). Basically interface testing and code gen verification. Cool stuff, and sometimes I still use my older copy of it. I'd probably still be putting bug reports in for it if Viewpoint had a semi-public bug tracking interface.
  • Unicast
    General Technologist/Qa
    Unicast Jul 2004 - Dec 2004
Great place to work. Good people, interesting culture. Much of what needed testing already had test suites created for it, but I was given the ability to automate things as I felt necessary, so long as it didn't interfere with deadlines, or waste time(i.e. - I couldn't code anything I wanted, but anything I wanted to code that would help Unicast AND make my job as a QA Engineer, and other QA Engineer's jobs better was almost always fair game).Unicast was purchased by Viewpoint at the end of 2004.
  • Solectron
    Technical Support
    Solectron Aug 2003 - Jul 2004
Cellphone Tech at Forest Hills Verizon Wireless with Solectron Global Services.Basically finger-hacking cellphones and swapping them out, but when I first started, they'd occasionally let me open cellphones and fix their internals(which is actually easier for me, since most problems just require the phone have a decent cleaning, or something annoying like the speaker or the microphone replaced).I could fix the phone by just grabbing a T6 and a toothbrush, or even by just replacing individual components. When I didn't have to swap them out, or open them up, there's always finger hacking the cellphone's setup, which helps depending on what needs to be fixed. In the end, I left them on pretty good terms for the job at Unicast.
  • Fray Printing, Inc.
    Digital Prepress Op/Graphic Designer
Fray Printing, Inc. Mar 2001 - May 2003
The digital version of what I had previously done in analog at Hanover Direct - design and prepress - this time, with Quark, Photoshop, and Illustrator instead of a razor blade, masking tape and film!Eventually I ended up helping some clients with design work. Working at Fray also gave me a place to learn a modest amount of Spanish, as many of my coworkers spoke Spanish, and were quite willing to correct me when I said something the wrong way, or interpreted what they said the wrong way. This job also gave me the ability to work with production RIPs and film plotters, as well as to work with Pantone colors, swatchbooks, etc.Good stuff.(p.s. - I recommend Fray for almost any printing people need, as most everyone there knows their job quite well, and have great eyes for the stuff they work on.)
  • Hanover Direct, Inc.
    Analog Prepress Op
Hanover Direct, Inc. Sep 1998 - Feb 1999
Exposing, Developing, Finishing, Cutting and Masking Film. Exposing and Developing Plates for printing.Great stuff. Not too bright(I like to work in the dark on a light table), and I got to do a lot of work alone. Helped me to establish a routine for a work day, and I like to work in darkrooms.
  • Axiom Systems
    Computer/Electronic Repair Tech
    Axiom Systems Sep 1997 - Mar 1998
Learned a lot about EE here, how to fix various electrical circuits - got the chance to reverse-engineer a WebTV here, and quite a lot of soldering experience.Much of my time here was spent on a workbench with a soldering iron, a multimeter, and an oscilloscope, although sometimes people would come in with a computer to repair, or order a computer to be built and I'd build it/help build it/set it up, whatever.Cool place, small business, but lot of comp stuff that I could do. Ultimately, I had to leave because the owner couldn't make a lot of money off of repair, etc. and was paying me in pager service.
