Atmospheric Scientist
Postdoctoral Researcher
Pre-Doctoral Research Associate
*Investigated the increase of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) during wildfire season in the Northwestern US. Determined that while annual PM2.5 is decreasing due to anthropogenic clean-up, wildfire season PM2.5 is increasing dramatically.*Conducted a field campaign to collect peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) information in urban areas (Boise, ID) under the influence of wildfires. Investigation of PAN was used to determine enhancements of ozone during wildfire events.*Designed and constructed a cost-effective and efficient system for ambient sampling of VOCs. Identified VOCs, in particular Acetonitrile as a tracer for biomass burning via TD-GC-MS methodology. *Data mined and studied CO2 events at the Mount Bachelor Observatory. Studied boundary layer and free tropospheric variations in CO2. Discovered that CO2 is not always a good tracer of biomass burning due to boundary layer uptake.
Graduate Research Associate
Developed and implemented an oxidized mercury calibration system to quantify EPA standard Tekran Speciation System measurements. Constructed a stable Gaseous Oxidized Mercury Permeation Source. Quantified mercury compounds from ambient atmospheric measurements.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
Assisted in leading a class on Climate Change with Dr. Lyatt Jaegle (University of Washington). Taught three individual sections weekly to support student education and encourage critical thinking on the subject of climate change. Excellent teaching award received from nominations by students after quarter concluded.
Pre Doctoral Lecturer
Instrumental Analysis Lab Instructor providing instruction in following topics:Signal-to-Noise Analysis; Fluorescence Spectroscopy; ICP-OES; HPLC; GC headspace analysis; Spectroelectrochemistry; Mass SpectrometryQuantitative Environmental Analysis Lab Instructor providing instruction in the following topics:pH & Buffering Capacity; Statistical Analysis; Flow-Injection Analysis Spectroscopy; UV-Vis Spectroscopy; Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy; GC-MS AnalysisGeneral Chemistry I & II Lab instructor providing instruction in the following topics:Beer's Law; Calorimetry; Flame Ionization; Enthalpy; Synthesis & Purification of Acids; Thin-Layer Chromatography.
Nsf Eapsi Research Fellow
NSF's East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) Program in conjunction with the China Science and Technology Exchange Center (CSTEC).Principal Investigator studying Gaseous Oxidized Mercury (GOM) in power plant flue gas near Beijing, China. Performed laboratory simulations of power plant emissions using a drop-tube furnace located at Tsinghua University. Sampled GOM from power plants around Beijing.
Tutor For Atmospheric Science
Tutored Atmospheric Science students. Subjects included, but were not limited to: Atmospheric Sciences, Math, Chemistry and Physics. Sessions were available to all levels of Atmospheric Science undergraduate students.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I worked with Dr. Don Collins over several projects involving atmospheric aerosols including my senior thesis project. For that specific project we attempted to qualify nucleation precursors (i.e. Hydroxyl Radical and Ozone during the day and Nitrate radical at night) and their hygroscopic properties.Projects: RACORO Data Assimilation and Dissemination; Hygroscopicity studies (κ testing); Miniature Cloud Chamber Design; Reconfiguration and Reanalysis of CCN instruments
