CurrentA foster child has a 20% chance of graduating high school, less than 1% chance of graduating college, 80% chance of becoming an alcoholic, and a 66% chance of becoming homeless or dead within one year of aging out of the system. What's really scary is that 80% of the prison population was once in foster care. I wasn’t supposed to ‘make it’. The odds were stacked against me. Instability, neglect, sexual abuse, lack of love, the murder of my step father, foster care, trauma, and lots of anger and hurt made up most of my childhood. Luckily, with the help of teachers, coaches, and few other angels, I saw a way out. I graduated high school at the age of 16 and went to college at Mississippi State University with $25 in my pocket to major in Business Administration. At that point, I had moved over twenty times, struggling to find a home - a place I wasn’t sure even existed. At times, I worked four jobs and took more than 15 hours of school, sometimes 18 or even 21 hours. By the time I graduated college and changed my major to gain a Bachelor of Education, I had opened a bridal and formal wear shop and was blessed with three amazing daughters. Since then, I’ve been a teacher, a mentor, a volunteer, a financial service rep, a speaker, a sales director, the founder Unify Human:Kind, the recipient of the community SHEro award, and soon to be author of “Obliterate the Odds”.
