The main project of my PhD is the VOILA multicenter lifestyle intervention study, with diet and exercise in older adults to study determinants of ageing and their heterogeneity; for whom does the intevention work best and why? By measuring various outcomes, ranging from the metabolome, to gut and muscle we aim to better understand the ageing process, which in the future aims to contribute to preventive and clinical interventions better suited to the various older adults.I started my research at the official project start under supervision of Prof.dr.ir. Lisette de Groot and dr.ir. Pol Grootswagers. By organising regular meetings with stakeholders from several universities I coordinated the decision process to crystallise the project plan. I obtained ethical clearance for the project and coordinated operating procedurs for multicenter use. Together with the other PhD students at MUMC and LUMC we prepared for and are currently carrying out data collection. At WUR I coordinate the VOILA team with sport trainers, nurses, research assistants and master students.

This internship I worked on two research projects regarding nutritional intake in older people.- The first project consisted of an odour intervention in elderly patients with dementia in a care home.I collected and processed food diaries, carried out cognitive assessment questionnaires, appetite questionnaires and anthropometric measurements and wrote a scientific report. - The second project consisted of a descriptive study of hip fracture patients on a rehabilitation ward, measuring nutritional intake, anthropometric, performance and muscle mass parameters in hip fracture patients. Both projects provided valuable experience in research methods, working with the people we study, learning about their lives and settings. It taught me how valuable practical insights from professionals are for successful research as well.
