I am a lawyer at Drew & Napier, and my key areas of practice are Telecommunications, Media & Technology, as well as Artificial Intelligence & Digital Trust. My practice can be summed up as: If you want to do something with your data (or data obtained from other sources), I can help you with identifying and resolving any legal issues that arise. I also advise on regulatory matters to ensure that your activities remain within the scope of the law (and your licence). I have advised a range of entities from Fortune 500 MNCs to local and foreign start-ups on legal and governance issues arising from their use of artificial intelligence ("AI"). I also enjoy writing about legal issues arising from the use of AI, as a way to keep up to date with the news and consolidate my thoughts, and contribute to the local discourse. In addition, I have conducted seminars/talks on AI legal and governance issues with local organisations such as IPOS International & the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce, local and ASEAN regulators, and local (NUS/SMU) and European universities. My articles with the Singapore Law Society can be found here: https://lawgazette.com.sg/author/cheryl-seah/, where I write about everything from examining how the unique features of AI may affect the application of conventional principles of liability, to evaluating the solutions to the IP risks posed by generative AI. I have also been invited to contribute my views on AI issues with research institutions such as the Global Cyber Security Capacity Centre at the University of Oxford, and the Global Index on Responsible AI. Before joining Drew & Napier, I was a state counsel/legislative drafter in the Legislation Division of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (Singapore’s central law drafting office). I advised Ministries/statutory boards on the policies they wished to effect, and drafted amendments to the law if the policy required such changes. I have drafted legislation across a variety of subjects, with a focus on transport (including autonomous vehicles), infrastructure, technology and civil procedure. I was also one of 2 lawyers managing Singapore’s largest revision of laws to date (the 2020 Revised Edition of Acts), working with Ministries and statutory boards to simplify and update the language of 510 Acts spanning 27,000 pages.
