I began my journey in this field while I was in high school. I visited the drafting course at the local vocational school. The instructor was well known for his high-performing students and had a “wall of fame” from all of the SkillsUSA (formerly VICA), competitions. That very instant, I told myself, “I will be on that wall”. Growing up with family members in the construction field and seeing our family home being built from the ground up, I had an initial interest in construction. I was drawn to the drafting program for several reasons, one being that wall. I had an amazing drafting instructor who helped mold me into the person I am today. I am extremely lucky to have amazing mentors in my career path. Never did I imagine taking the path that I did, from drafting pre-cast concrete panels to managing and running an antique auto parts company. My late boss, Mr. Burton, was an inspiration. Leaving the auto parts business and the company he had built was difficult. I knew in my heart where my passion lay. I knew he would rather I do what makes me happy, so long as I finished school (which I did). I can truly say, being in the architectural field, and being able to draft, was part of my dream all those years ago. With my drafting and management skills, the sky’s the limit.
