I develop tools that catalyze new technologies and that promote improvement of the human experience.I am an expert in analytical instrument design and development, with specialties in advanced imaging systems and science instruments, ranging from atomic-resolution structural imaging to portable charged-particle based analyzers. The teams I work with produce high-performance automation and metrology systems serving nanotechnology, materials, biological engineering and sciences, and space systems, aiming to efficiently push the limits of human understanding, improve health, and provide foundations for building next-generation technologies. My current focus is on portable accessible analyzers, including off-world instruments, and ultra-high-throughput automation technologies.

CeoVoxa Co Apr 2012 - PresentSeattle, WaVoxa was founded to transform analytical nanoscale imaging. Nano-imaging is a key component of the technology development chain supporting broad industries including microchips, drug therapies, and surgical implants. Voxa's engineering and support teams are committed to bringing this technology to a broader base of scientists, engineers, educators & learners, and the public to unlock the nano-world.Voxa's award-winning Mochii "S" is the world's first field-portable electron microscope, able to take sophisticated laboratory analyses including chemical identification into new and extreme environments, including outer space. Mochii has arrived at the ISS to help detect crew and vehicle mission threats and perform novel microgravity science, and is the first instrument of its kind in space. Mochii will serve as part of the backbone of services as part of the ISS National Laboratory and is a research platform for exploration beyond low Earth orbit. Voxa also produces high-accessibility automated industrial imaging systems that push the limits of collaboration, acquisition speed, and data size, customized for transformative science. Voxa's solutions cover high-resolution and high-throughput imaging, sample preparation, and automation for customers around the world including in energy, neuroscience, medicine, and aerospace. -

Principal Research PhysicistHalcyon Molecular Dec 2009 - Mar 2012Redwood City, CaAt Halcyon Molecular, I developed high-throughput DNA sequencing instrumentation based on electron microscopes (EM) that acquires image data 5-6 orders of magnitude faster than previous imaging technologies. I served as principal investigator for a $2.5M NIH grant funding a multidisciplinary team developing next-generation high-throughput and low-cost de novo gene sequencing technologies. Our team increased the speed of EM-based analyzers by 5 orders of magnitude and delivered the first ever sequence data from an EM-based DNA sequencer. -
Research PhysicistNion Company Jul 2005 - Nov 2009Kirkland, WaDesigned, manufactured, and supported development of the world's highest-performance commercial scanning transmission electron microscope system. Executed several key subsystems, performed R&D and manufacturing logistics, presented work at conferences, and supported customers.Contributions include the world's highest-precision atomic-resolution sample stage, robust automated multi-sample handling, lens / deflector / detector systems, and mixed-signal acquisition and control electronics, software, and firmware.

Research FellowNorthwestern University Sep 2001 - Jul 2005Evanston, IlDeveloped and implemented Precession Electron Diffraction (PED), a new nanodiffraction method that improves diffraction data quality from the electron microscope, enabling quick and inexpensive determination of atomic structure and grain orientation of nanocrystals. This work provided the theoretical basis and proof of concept for the many commercial PED systems actively used in research and industry today. Also conducted research on nanoparticles, nanocoatings, and catalysts, and built and operated supercomputing clusters for density-functional theory (DFT) atomic modeling of surfaces and interfaces. -
