Presently, I work as a cyber security analyst and programmer. I hunt for suspicious emails and attachments/malicious URIs, download and analyze current malware, perform full packet capture analysis, and review/design/tweak IDS/IPS alerts. Basically, blue-team defensive security. I monitor approximately ~69K endpoints. I build IT/IS systems like servers/VMs, deploy apps and leverage APIs to automate ("glue-ware") them, and test them endlessly. DFIR is a by-product of my job, but not a full-time focus. I assist LEO, IG and IC groups in my current role on as as-needed/deep-dive basis. Additionally, I am an angel investor in a solar manufacturing startup, NanoXSolar (www.nanoxsolar.com), specializing in US-based peroskovites manufacturing using domestic ingot and wafer manufacturing. We are currently in our Series-A funding round and have executed power purchase agreements (PPA) with the State of New Mexico. We are building a vertically integrated manufacturing and solar sales group with the planned opening of a facility for utilization of ingot growth technology. This is most exciting thing I have ever done and I am grateful for the opportunity to get in on the ground floor with a group of incredibly talented and driven technologists.Recently, I was involved in a machine-learning startup based around leveraging supervised and unsupervised training on data sets to provide best-of-breed proposal development for the government contracting sector. It was the best six months I've had in a while--learning new technologies at a rapid pace, discarding them for better choices, and constantly shooting ourselves in the foot. In other words, tons of fun. But, like many startups, some strong personalities made me and my dev team walk--too much talk, not enough development and the organization was skipping around a lot of ideas without committing. In the past, I hopscotched back and forth between the non-profit and commercial sectors which used to give me dueling career paths; I have worked in marketing and fund-raising to some degree as much as I have worked in IT/IS systems, web development, and infosec. For a large period, I've usually been at the intersection where IT/IS systems meet the money coming into an organization. I think everyone should have that perspective--you generally learn to avoid costly technology decisions.

Cyber Security Software Engineer & Malware AnalystE-Management Oct 2014 - Jun 2018Silver Spring, Md, UsMy day-to-day job at the US Department of Energy - Environmental Management involves PCAP analysis for continuous monitoring, malware hunting, dynamic and static analysis of malware binaries, and reverse engineering of interesting candidates. I monitor our intrusion detection systems (IDS) and intrusion protection systems (IPS), and proactively spend my day searching for what they routinely miss on our 69,000 endpoint network, which is overseen by a team of four analysts, including myself. I analyze all malware I find, whether it was successful, or not, to get all indicators of compromise (IOC ) and related forensics to feed back into our IDS/IPS and share with our partners. Generally, my team has an infection-to-detection (dwell time) window of 30-60 minute. When infections are identified, I write reports to our customers to help them find their infections. Additionally, I review open source intelligence (OSINT) as well as proprietary and classified threat indicators. I maintain a database of all the malware we come across and disseminate derived indicators to our customers, partners and law enforcement and intelligence agencies. As necessary, I write scripts to automate mundane and repetitive tasks, or to provide glueware between various systems. As needed, I build and deploy server systems for our out-of-band, oversight network, and provide subject matter expertise to our customers on new and emerging threats. In my spare time, I'm studying ICS and SCADA systems to expand the footprint of what our team monitors. I perform digital forensic for our government customers for various investigations. -
