Working on designs for the large engine control components. Implementing microprocessor controls and analog circuits.
Austin, Texas, Us
This position came through the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle. Designed the electronics for a robotic tape library, SL150. The design has a control processor and several motion control boards for controlling motors, sensors and cameras. Used USB as a communications path to micro controllers managing motors and sensors. Designed the video display for the SL150 library. This was a 800x480 pixel display with 18 bits of color. Design the HDMI to LVDS and back light power supply.Designed a carrier board for a Com Express module (x86 processor). The carrier provided additional functionality for a large tape robotic library, SL4000. Those functions included were Fibre Channel, SAS, SATA, Ethernet ports, video support and an FPGA to manage multiple sensor inputs and signal outputs for various library and robot operations. My design work includes the circuit board component placement and routing. Considerations for multi-gagabit traces and EMI filtering is also taken into the design steps for these boards.Design work has included implementing the PCIe interface in an FPGA. Worked on a SAS JBOD architecture that improved host access to data and provided a higher fault tolerance to component failures. I am now working on the electronics for a new robotic library system. The design has a control processor and several motion control boards for controlling motors, sensors and cameras.

Designed the control processor board for an Enterprise high performance data storage system. This design used the PCIe bus for implementing high speed data paths for the data storage system. Multiple daughter cards were part of this design. System functions included data compression and ECC protections for all data throughout. Product was a high reliability and fault tolerant system for the enterprise class data storage devices.
I managed a design group that was chartered with designing of high reliability and fault tolerant systems for data storage. Disk arrays and virtual tape products. The department designed two processor control boards that were used in the Fibre Channel interface to servers and main frame computers.
Designed and drew up schematics for the disk interface curcuit boards in the StorageTek vertual disk array nicknamed Iceberg. The disk array transitioned from ESDI disk drives to SCSI drives. Then under IBM contract I designed for the IBM SSA drives. Following that the drive trend moved on to SAS and Fibre Channel drives. I designed the interface cards for each of these drive interfaces. The interface board also used a processor to handle the drive commands and moving data between the disk drive and the vertual storage system memory. This memory interface was a proprietary design that untilized a serial bus architecture. I was responsible for the schematic capture and circuit board layout. Board design considerations required knowledge of multi-gagabit trace routing, cross-talk midigation and EMI practices to minimize emissions.
Designed and built the Surface Analyer test equipment for the 14 inch disk drive products. This involved knowledge of magnetic recording technology analog circuit design and high speed digital designs. Worked closely with software engineers to have the hardware detect and report the exact locations of media defects so that the software could record the defect locations in the track format headers. I did this for 5 generations of 14 inch disk products. Designed a track buffer that would hold all the data for one full track to speed up the overall performance of hte surface analyzers. All equipment was installed and maintained in clean room environments.
Charlotte, North Carolina, Us
Responabilities were to test and repair circuit boards for Sonar and Radar equipment for the Navy. I was certified in soldering (removal and repair of components), wire-wrap, cable and connector crimping. Performed Hi-Pot testing on major assembly components.
Norfolk, Va, Us
Duties included maintenance and repair of criptographic equipment, radio receivers and transmitters. I also repaired teletype printers. Held a top secret clearance while working at the Atlantic Fleet Communications Center there in Norfolk. Was released from active duty in June 1975 and returned to California where I continued with the active reserves until 1978. I was horably discharged at that time.
