Writer

Current

Akron, Ohio

I'm a writer with work published in lit mags, anthologies, business training manuals, my blog, an alumni magazine, and newsletters, including The Hot Sheet.Pieces for my blog Philosofishal: personal essays, travel writing, nature poetry, novels, book reviews, arts analysis, encouraging writers. Example: "A Dog's DNA, Part 3" - Excerpt: The Victorian era gave birth to our modern understanding of dog breeds. . . . Unfortunately and inevitably, inbred populations also led to a higher incidence of genetic disease through rising frequencies of damaging mutations being expressed in individual purebred lines.Yet, despite all these purifying efforts and goals, nature to this day keeps finding ways to diversify life. As I said above, “Nature loves variety.” The general public rarely sees how often deviations from breed standard occur outside the show ring, but it’s a fact that not every purebred puppy fits the breed standard.Corgis and Dachshunds are born with longer legs, Rhodesian ridgebacks come without ridges, golden retrievers make black puppies, small Shih Tzus beget overgrown pups, and English bulldogs emerge less wrinkly, taller, or with a longer tail than standard. The list of ways canine biology seems to rebel against artificial selection by humans is longer than the list of recognized breeds. And the Future?Pedigree dog breeding still causes a variety of cascading problems today. Disease-promoting approaches to inbreeding create a threat of breed extinction, which has happened in the past but also means dogs are unhealthy for long periods of time over multiple generations. At the other extreme, breed-specific legislation based on unjust prejudice due to misinformation enables needless suffering and euthanasia. Inevitably, both our love and hatred for purebred dogs hurt them most at the extremes.

Writing Tutor

Carrie Tangenberg Tutoring Services

Akron, Ohio, United States

Private, one-to-one online tutoring with secondary, undergraduate, graduate level, and adult students. Launched in January 2021, this enterprise brought me my first student client in this capacity: a senior at the University of Richmond seeking to enhance her English language arts skills prior to starting work in the summer. Building on our successful semester of work together, the experiment continues as I open my coaching and tutoring services to more self-motivated learners of writing, language, literature, research, critical thinking, and career development.

I tutor and guide elementary to graduate-level students and adults (US/Canada) via online chat and classroom environment, as well as drop-off paper review. Subjects: English, English Essay Writing, College-Level Essay Writing, Career Help, Literature. Promoted March 2018, May 2015, March 2013Sample session topics: poetry writing & analysis, research papers, argumentation, elements of fiction, rhetorical analysis, MLA APA & Chicago/Turabian citation styles, resume writing, the writing process, philosophical theory, college & scholarship applications, grammar, paper revision/editing, job search, English language learning.Client comments:- "My tutor was one of the best I’ve worked with so far...very kind and helpful!”- “Everything was explained to me in a way I could completely understand!”- “I recommend this tutor for everyone out there who needs sentence structure help. She took her time with me, helped me figure out the problem very quickly.”- “She was very helpful. I thought I didn’t know the answer but she got it out of me.”- "This tutor is amazing! She went over my ideas with me and helped me sharpen them into a thesis statement. Also, although she was well versed in philosophy, she did not try to force me into paths I did not understand. In other words, she scaffolded my knowledge and brought me up a level or two so I can proceed on my own."- “This tutor is definitely a 20/10. I went from not understanding my assignment to having a complete understanding. She was very patient and extremely informative. I had to write a paper using the Toulmin Method and she hit the nail right on the head. She goes above and beyond. If anyone has a writing assignment I would definitely recommend her.”- "Super English Teacher!"
