Hey! I’m Carlos González, a graduate of the University of Maryland Landscape Architecture program.My first conscious encounter with landscape architecture was at five years old. While visiting family in Mexico City, we went to el Parque de Los Venados (Park of the Deer or Deer Park) and I immediately became enamored with what it represented, although I did not fully comprehend what I felt. Since that day, I have had a curiosity with how environments that surround us interact with each other, which later turned into a need of knowing how to craft spaces that achieve a harmonious, cohesive balance between the natural, built, and human environments. My main focuses with landscape architecture are community design, ecological restoration, and creating regenerative urban greenspaces. Originating from a coastal area that is dramatically affected by the oil and gas industry and low-density car-centric urban sprawl, I feel that it is vital for our survival not only as humans, but as a planet, to create spaces that help alleviate the stress that humans place on the earth. Whether that is assisting in mitigating damaging effects from floods and the heat island effect by implementing green infrastructure in our cities public right of ways and private land, rebuilding riparian zones along rivers and streams that were destroyed for land development, and combining all these elements with community building designs to foster a stronger bond among people and place. These are elements that shape my design and drive me to create gathering spaces for people and ecology.
