I started as a full time medical assistant at Palmetto ENT on July 6th. During a day in clinic I normally work with 25-30 patients. I am the first interaction a patient has during their clinic setting, and as such play a key role during their care here. I collect vitals and chief complaint, conduct tympanograms and the anesthetizing of the patients. I prepare the room and necessary tools based upon what the patient is presenting to us for, which can be anything from scopes to sutures. I assist in FNAs, CT scans, and in office surgeries such as myringotomy and tubes or excision of lesions.

Our research group analyzed over 15 sample sites from different streams across the upstate South Carolina area in order to compile data to determine if poultry farming effects stream quality. This consisted of field collection days (in order to collect samples and fish) and lab days (in order to run tests). We measured variables such as water chemistry, turbidity, water volume, fish collection, fish bio-markers, and bacteria. Bacteria was my specific focus, growing Enterococcus, Heterotroph, and E. coli cultures in medium within the lab in order to determine differing levels. I have presented our research both at Furman University and at a conference, orally and as a poster.

Furman University

I was one of two student farm managers, with a focus on the composting initiatives of Furman University. I was responsible for managing a team of 14 other students in the upkeep of the farm, while maintaining the composting used in the farm's facilities. The upkeep included watering, planting, tilling, aeration, compost spreading, special projects, leading classes and lab groups that would come to the farm, and any other problems that might surface. The composting involved collection of food waste materials from the dining services on campus, using proper techniques with the composting equipment, and selling the compost to community members.

At this Family Practice I would take back patients and assign them rooms to be seen by a physician. I would take weight and height, vitals, chief complaint, run urinalyses and other tests, O2 Sat., EKGs, and physicals. I would also enter patient history. During my time here the office has switched to a computer based charting system, and we converted all patient histories over to the new system. I would answer phones and schedule appointments for the patients for labs and physician visits. I would also call and discuss patients' lab results with the patients. I would work over the breaks and summers while I was not in school.
