About Cullen Wells

Hardworking record label owner, storyteller, researcher, and administrative assistant with a background in a number of media-oriented businesses, including an influential D.C. think tank, a major NYC publisher, a groundbreaking Pittsburgh magazine, and a well-regarded LA screenplay reading and competition service.I started Floating Mill Records in 2021. Unfortunately due to illness, my label has been in hiatus but we will be back soon! When I'm not updating my LinkedIn profile in my free time, I'm probably listening to music, watching a movie, playing with a dog, or trying to backseat coach the Steelers to a seventh Super Bowl.

I run Floating Mill Records, which largely focuses on reissuing rare and underheard post-punk music. Our label and releases have been covered/playlisted by Bandcamp, NPR Music, Aquarium Drunkard, Hype Machine's Stack newsletter, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and many other wonderful publications. Very honored to be trusted to organize these releases and have greatly enjoyed trying to gain them a wider audience.

Office Production Assistant

Dear Zoe

Staring Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy), Jessica Capshaw (Grey's Anatomy), and Justin Bartha (The Hangover, the National Treasure series), Dear Zoe is a highly anticipated collaboration between Zin Haze Productions and Resonate Entertainment that is expected to be released in 2020.As a production assistant for Dear Zoe, I was able to help a film progress through pre-production, 28 days of shooting, and wrap, even being entrusted as the last person working on the production office staff. Finances were tight and there was some staff turnover, which required I take on responsibilities integral to many different aspects of the production. Working extensively on projects with the film's producers, production office coordinator, and the accountant gave me invaluable insights to many steps in the filmmaking and media production process. Perhaps the most important of all these insights is how much time, effort, and care go into making a movie. The Dear Zoe team was over 100 people working hard for over 12 hours a day. Every day, set was a small city with a ever changing array of issues that needed worked through. In the production office, I was able to help organize all that activity and solve those problems to ensure that things ran as efficiently as possible.

Receptionist & Assistant Office Manager

Medicare Specialists of Pittsburgh is an independent company that helps Medicare and Medicaid recipients, as well as private consumers, find the healthcare plan that works best given their specific medical needs. During the time I worked at MSP, the busy office consisted of six employees and hundreds of clients that often had urgent medical concerns, which created many high-pressure challenges for me as the Executive/Administrative Assistant. I was responsible for organizing the hectic schedules of all six of the company's employees, trying to balance the needs of different clients in the process. Adding additional pressure, I had to accurately log highly personal and confidential information into various administrative programs in order for the clients to receive the correct health plan at the correct time. As the office receptionist, I also greeted the office's many walk-ins and assisted and redirected the constant incoming telephone callers. In the process of being an administrative assistant, I refined my skills with administrative programs such as Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook), Google suite (including Calendar), FileMaker Pro, Salesforce suite, and many more industry-specific programs.

CNF is a multifaceted nonprofit that promotes quality nonfiction storytelling through educational opportunities, two magazines (Creative Nonfiction and True Story), and a book imprint (In Fact Books). At CNF, I learned every step of how to take a publication from the pre-submission stage to post-production. One of my major responsibilities was researching and reaching out to writers/writers' groups that might be interested in specific themed calls for submissions for CNF's magazines and book imprint. Then I evaluated hundreds of the incoming submissions. Once selected for publication, I fact-checked and copy-edited the stories. After the publications were ready to be released, I helped reach potential customers, largely by promoting upcoming products and services through developing advertisements on CNF's website.Additionally, I held many administrative responsibilities that gave me insight into the workings of a nonprofit media company. For example, I ran errands, prepared hundreds of orders for shipments, and logged confidential contracts. In addition, I assisted in the planning, organization, and execution of various classes and events, including CNF's annual conference, which attracts hundreds of writers from around the world. I was also lucky to be able to participate in discussions about the identity and future of CNF"s publication, True Story, which had its first release during my time at CNF.

Publishing over 400 titles annually, W. W. Norton is America's largest independent and employee-owned publishing house. As the department intern for the ever-interesting and educational subject of sociology, I had an amazing experience playing a role in such a large media company. My primary responsibility was combing through hundreds of pages of dense textbooks as a copy editor. I was also given opportunities to inject my own voice into the company and curriculum. To supplement the textbooks, I developed and edited educational tools such as graphics and online tests, largely on Norton's InQuizitive program. Additionally, I crafted daily Facebook posts on three separate, popular accounts for Norton products. To round out my major responsibilities, I surveyed numerous textbooks to analyze what information was updated from previous editions for marketing purposes, which was a painstaking test of my attention to detail.

Since 1989, PPI has been a ground-breaking center-left political think tank, even earning the unofficial designation of being President Bill Clinton's "idea mill" during his two terms. At PPI, I primarily worked on the production and release of policy recommendations and reports during the hectic 2016 election. Working closely with PPI's scholars, I scoured innumerable online databases researching and fact-checking critical evidence for reports. Once written, I copy-edited projects and created graphics and citations to best display evidence. Once the project was of the highest quality, I identified specialized members of the media who would be most interested in the release of the report and drafted press releases used to contact them. One such report I was lucky enough to work on was, "Unleashing Innovation and Growth: A Progressive Alternative to Populism" (link below). This report established PPI's policy focuses for the entire year, making it the keystone document of 2016 for PPI's investors and readers. With my supervisor out of town, I copy-edited and fact-checked this 72-page report alone. My effort on the report earned me personal praise as a "copy editor extraordinaire" in the document's acknowledgements. On top of my work on the editorial team, I performed many administrative tasks such as dealing with donors, reorganizing internal files, planning events, and posting to and maintaining PPI's website. These administrative tasks exposed me to many of the intricacies involved with running such a nonprofit entity.
