RETIREDAfter "50 years at hard labor"β, I finally decided to treat myself to doing what I wanted to do rather than just what I was required to do. I've since worked harder than I can recall ever having worked before. There was so much to be experienced, and so many tasks to be accomplished that I actually found less disposable time available than when working a regularly scheduled, full-time job. A full-time job demands so much of our attention that we don't realize how little we actually accomplish. With few brief exceptions, I've spent my entire life in the technological arena... and now, how I loathe that field. I much prefer interacting with human beings... rather than machines. I use a personal computer, in my home office, primarily as a necessary evil (I can't even find ribbons for my typewriter anymore). And I do appreciate the communication capabilities presented for such forums as the one I'm using at the moment. But you won't catch me with a SMART PHONE or iPad. I have a cell phone... but it's used exclusively for making and receiving VOICE telephone calls. Interesting concept, what? Using a phone as a phone? I also use a camera as a camera. My favorite word processor is a pencil and a paper notebook . I read BOOKS (bound paper volumes you can touch) that can be read under a tree in the park without glare on a screen or worrying about a battery going dead. It is, perhaps, ironic that the happiest and proudest moments of my life were during the years I was a Customer Engineer for the world's largest scientific mainframe computer manufacturer, CONTROL DATA CORPORATION. The era 1970-1986. Not just coincidentally encompassing the Disco Era.Current Interests include Behavioral Sciences (particularly CBT) and writing.Born in Ironton, Ohio. Left to join the USAF in 1966. Returned to the area in August 2013Part-time, unarmed Public Safety Officer at the Ashland Town Center Mall from September 17, 2014 through 05/23/2020. The mall closed during the pandemic spike in March 2020. When the mall re-opened, corporate management would not authorize enforcement of the mandated wearing of face masks . Therefore, I submitted my resignation. So, now, I am mostly idle and without any apparent purpose. After a lifetime of assisting in keeping machines and companies running, I may have outlived my usefulness. But, who knows what tomorrow will bring?I finally finished a book I'd been working on for what seemed like forever: Of Fear Itself. Published the 2nd edition in three formats 12/31/2019. Available from LULU.com and AMAZON.

RetiredEnjoying What'S Left Of Life Jul 2013 - PresentAshland, KyDoing pretty much what I want to do... when I want to do it. But I manage to keep busy. From October 2013 to March 2015, I logged a few hours on Mondays and Tuesdays of alternate weeks as an unarmed private Security Officer at Insurance Auto Auctions. Let's emphasize "unarmed"β, shall we? You won't find me carrying any weapon of deadly force... ever. Beginning in September 2014 (and continuing to the present**), I have been working part time for WP GLIMCHER (now known as Washington Prime) at the Ashland Town Center Mall as an unarmed Public Safety Officer (later performing duty at that location under G4S Secure Solutions and later for Allied Universal Security). I still maintain my stand against weapons of deadly force. ** A slight amendment is required. I ceased being a Public Safety Officer during the COVID-19 pandemic. The corporate management of the mall would not authorize my fellow officers, or myself, to enforce the mandated wearing of face masks that could help protect the health and safety of the guests, tenants and employees at the mall. I felt that, if I was not permitted to ensure the safety of the public, I could not (in good faith) remain a Public Safety Officer. Therefore, I submitted my resignation effective 5/23/2020. So, now, I am mostly idle and without any apparent purpose. After a lifetime of assisting in keeping machines and companies running, I may have outlived my usefulness. But, who knows what tomorrow will bring? I finally finished a book I'd been working on for what seemed like forever: Of Fear Itself. Published the 2nd edition in three formats 12/31/2019. Available from LULU.com and AMAZON. See Accomplishments (Publications).

Customer EngineerControl Data Corporation Mar 1970 - Jan 1986Minneapolis, Mn / Tobyhanna, Pa / Lexington, Ky / Dayton, OhMy first day with Control Data Corporation was March 16, 1970 (at the main plant in Bloomington, MN) in training as a Customer Engineer for CDC 3300 systems. I initially applied while I was halfway through my enlistment with the USAF (in Pleiku, RVN in 1968). Near the completion of my second tour of duty in Southeast Asia (Mukdahan, Thailand in December 1969) an interview was scheduled in San Jose for the day after my scheduled return (through Travis AFB).The greater part of my career at C.D.C. was spent installing, repairing and maintaining CDC3300 and CDC3500 mainframe (Big Iron) computer systems at D.O.D. facilities. Project SPEED Extended (or SPEEDEX) at Tobyhanna, PA (near Scranton) and Avon, KY (near Lexington). D.A.A.S.O. (Defense Automatic Addressing Systems) at D.E.S.C. in Kettering, OH (Dayton suburb) and Tracy, CA.As I stated in the summary, the years I spent with CDC as a C.E. on mainframe systems were the proudest and happiest of my life. If Bill Norris (Uncle Bill, as some of us called him) had continued as CEO, I would have remained until the doors closed. But the company changed, I changed and situations changed. So, effective February 1986, I moved on . But I will always remember CDC as the greatest computer company on the planet. It seems true that all good things must come to an end.** Reason for leavingChange in the corporate philosophy after the retirement of quite possibly the most beloved CEO any company has ever knownAccepted 5-year contract offer from Commercial Data Center, Inc.________________________

Automatic Tracking Radar Operations And RepairUnited States Air Force Apr 1966 - Feb 1970Biloxi, Ms / Wilder, Id / Pleiku, Rvn / Bien Hoa, Rvn / Mukdahan, ThailandInstallation, repair, maintenance and operations of several models of Reeves Instrument Corporation automatic tracking radar systems.DOMESTIC OPERATIONS consisted of radar bomb scoring to determine the effectiveness of mock bomb attacks by B-52 bomber crews... a kind of WAR GAME. Range, azimuth, elevation, earth-curvature correction, prevailing wind and ballistic tables were used in conjunction with a theoretical release point to determine the impact point if actual bombs had been dropped.VIETNAM WAR ZONE OPERATIONS (Code named: COMBAT SKY SPOT and relatively recently declassified) consisted of using the above information to guide B-52 heavy bombers and some tactical fighter-bombers (including F-100, F-4. A-6 and B-57) to their targets for surgical strikes in all weather conditions. This operation is unnecessary in war zones today due to the advent of GPS.** Reason for leavingEarly separation due to Government budgetary limitations. Assistant ManagerBob Evans Jan 1966 - Apr 1966N. 2Nd Street And Union Street, Ironton, Ohio 45638Among other duties, I tended to logistics. Placed orders and supervised unloading of goods. Reviewed employees' time-cards and resolved minor disputes between co-workers. In addition to having a sparkling clean kitchen, the emphasis was on FRESH. The word was repeated nearly ad nauseum (and strict adherence to it was keenly observed). Ensured fresh-daily dressings, and salads made as ordered. The restaurant chain owned a KFC franchise at the time. Fresh trays of chicken were prepared regularly. And for the grill, fresh ground beef was prepared daily (made of fresh lean beef and the required measure of beef tallow for flavor). The restaurant was known as Bob Evans' STEAK House in those days. So, since fine, AGED steaks were also offered, I suppose you couldn't say EVERYTHING was absolutely FRESH. But that was, of course, of necessity. Ensured the in-house bakery prepared an ample supply of freshly baked rolls and breads. Regularly inspected for general cleanliness of the entire facility.** Reason for leavingJoined U.S. Air Force upon loss of student deferment classification. Began electronics schooling after basic training, followed by specialized training in Automatic Tracking Radar Systems. Ironically, my assignment in the Air Force during the Vietnam War was remarkably similar to that of the WIRO Radio owner and chief engineer, Ken Auble, when he served in the U.S. Navy in World War II as RDM3. Ken was my inspiration to become an Electronics Engineer... my life's work and passion.________________________ -

Radio Announcer (Intern)Wiro Radio Jul 1965 - Nov 1965Radio Plaza, Ironton, OhioSince the day Dad taught me to solder, when I was not yet seven years of age, electronics was my hobby. By the time I had become a Senior in high school, I had the dream of earning an FCC 1st Class Commercial Radio Operator License. But the path to that license was not an easy one for an ordinary high school student. After graduation, I took and passed the first two steps (Elements 1 and 2) of the FCC exam in Charleston, WV (these elements primarily covered regulations and station procedures). They were required for the 3rd Class FCC Radio Operator License (and coupled to the in-depth electronics theory of Elements 3 and 4, would upgrade to a 1st Class License). But, on their own merits, they offered no real practical value. I had elected to take the exam for Element 9 (Broadcast Endorsement) in conjunction with 1&2 as it appeared to be relatively simple. Having passed this as well, I was licensed to operate a commercial radio station solo as a Radio Announcer / DJ. But being licensed to perform a function is a far cry from getting the job. The power of "who you knew" was the strongest tool for creating opportunity at that time.Perhaps that's still the case. The station manager at WIRO, Ken Auble, was one of my Dad's best friends. That turned out to be somewhat helpful. After a short discussion, Mr. Auble agreed to give me a try as an "intern" to learn a bit of the business... and possibly work my way into a regular spot at the station. I had already picked out a pseudonym for my "on air" personality... but unhappily I was unable to use it.For a few months,I tended to transmitter power and frequency meter readings, gathered weather and news information as it came off the teletype (occasionally I was permitted to read some of it on-the-air, anonymously),and emptied trash cans, etc.. all toward learning the business... and all for free. But college fees and books, and gasoline, were all costing real money. So I had to spend more time at my real job. C'est la vie.
