What if I use my God-given skills and career experience to bring people together to solve some of the world’s toughest problems? Lofty goal I know, but why not? As a leader at John Deere, I served successfully in several high-profile roles over the years. Now, the focus of my efforts has changed, from transforming Deere’s business to using my skills to help improve and actually save the lives of children in Kenya. One hundred million Africans go hungry every day and many children are simply abandoned, because their families can’t afford to feed them. It’s heartbreaking. I didn’t think it was enough to say, “Somebody needs to do something.” I needed to. So, what are we up to?There are hundreds of nonprofit organizations working every day to meet the spiritual and humanitarian needs of Kenyans, especially children. There‘s a huge opportunity in networking these assets regionally. My wife Paula and I work for an organization on the front lines who’s doing just that … God’s Grace for All Nations (GGFAN). We help them find the right partners to solve some very thorny systemic problems in the communities they serve. What specific problems is GGFAN working to solve? 1. Families need a way to sustain themselves. We provide simple-to-implement training in agriculture methods and entrepreneurship, so they become self-reliant and not dependent on band-aid relief efforts. 2. Kids need quality education. Our Christian school … Little Lambs Academy … is there for them. 3. Abandoned kids need to be rescued from the streets, so we find and train foster families. 4. Communities need basic services, so we plant Churches that become community centers for remote areasIs this a viable structure? Are the goals achievable? Yes! So, what’s missing? You … your help and your support. We’re all set up. The programs are in place and scalable.
