About Curtis Walling, Phd

Fortunate enough to receive the best training in the country at the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, and at the Boston VA Outpatient Clinic internship in Boston, Mass., Dr. Walling returned home to Arizona to open his private practice upon becoming an Arizona licensed Psychologist in 1987. He has maintained his private practice since that time, and has become particularly known for his work in creating Arizona's finest substance abuse treatment programs. ASAP, the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program, pioneered substance abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) programming for teens ages 12-18 in 1991 at three sites across the Valley (Glendale, Scottsdale, and Mesa), and remains the state of the art program to this day for adolescents. While in 2020 Dr. Walling prefers clinical work and managing the ASAP IOP Program full-time, some limited consultation and program development challenges are known to catch his eye from time to time.

ASAP, the Adolescent Substance Abuse Program, has proudly served as Arizona's finest outpatient substance abuse treatment program for young people ages 12-18 since 1991. Designed by three Phoenix-area psychologists, Dr. Curtis Walling, Dr. Phillip Lett, and Dr. Mark Rohde, the ASAP IOP program produces the "real-world" changes in home, family, school, and peer environments that yield meaningful and lasting sobriety in teens. With the help of the ASAP Program, adolescents and their parents can re-establish a clean and sober lifestyle and a mutually supportive relationship. Active participation is required of both adolescents and their parents. The teens attend group therapy three evenings per week for 10 weeks. Parents attend one of these sessions each week with their teen in Parent Night. An eclectic treatment model is utilized to approach adolescents from many angles. The copyrighted ASAP Curriculum is utilized as a proven therapy tool at all sites, and special focus is put on Motivational Interviewing and the Stages of Change Model. ASAP Homework is utilized for growth-oriented assignments between group therapy sessions and on weekends. Outcome studies are conducted to measure treatment success and provide the feedback needed for continuous quality improvement.
