Sr Software Architect for Govt. Customer, designing a mission capability. Position involves coordinating efforts of scrum-of-scrums development staff, system engineering staff and corporate governance. Efforts concluded with the leading implementation of an exclusive user experience using MeteorJS, Spring Framework / Spring Integration and MongoDB for a realtime analytic platform.

Mr. Bates served as the lead architect for a govt customer leading design of a high-speed, large scale object correlation and event-stream processing system. Mr. Bates instrumentally conveyed a “Culture of Refactor” where milestone iterations continually look at three dimensions: domain, process and technology, such that focus in one dimension doesn’t overplay the other. Concept encouraged build-and-rebuild for quick capability deployment with refinement overtime. Following this methodology, the program went operational in 6 months. Mr. Bates deployed Hyperic HQ EE for immediate monitoring of this processing system, when combined with JMX via Spring Integration, monitors 1000s of JMX mbeans across many JVM instances on many physical machines. The solution also includes HBase / Hadoop HDFS for write-through caching and long term log query, in-memory MongoDB cluster for metrics cache and global correlation space, RSS feeds for digest query retrieval, Flash / Flex 4.5 UI for Mission Management. Mr. Bates is also leading the design of a framework for remotely deployed elements of the system. Design elements use BPMN, UML, and DoDAF elements. Design considerations included multi-site, hot-hot operation and horizontal scaling. Other elements include development of F5 BigIP placement and iRule development for authentication / authorization and SSL offload as well as certificate management for SSL.

Working as the company's CTO, I help establish technical vision for the company. To that end, I engage vendors and partners that compliment our direction. SPT became an Adobe Partner in July 2008, with other partnerships emerging or flourishing. I've held an internal "Brown Bag" or technical exchange with employees and plan on performing more such efforts. Also as CTO, I work with the SPT staff in engaging potential customers. Feb 17, 2009, I sat on the "Integration - Web 2.0" panel at the Intelligence Community Executive Conference (ICEF) held in VA.

Prototyped RIA components using Flex w/ Cairngorm as the model template for continuing work. Custom interactive, graphic elements fit into a Google EXT framework conveying a mission operations dashboard w/ soft-realtime messaging and collaboration. Continue to supply architectural design support on a part-time basis.

Enterprise Architect for a Government Customer. In this role, I help identify SOA maturity / lifecycle notions and goals. I help apply current and emerging frameworks to the SOA goals and analyze gaps in offerings or business direction. I helped prototype a mission capability on the Servicemix product, showing alternatives, pluses and minuses of service refactoring vs mission delivery. Participated in architecture design efforts, customer engagement for mission capability and execution of customer capability. Responsible for decisions / direction for elements of network / lab configuration, software organization, and solution design. Working with other customer programs responsible for UDDI registry, SLM, messaging fabric, and site service hosting / deployment for a coordinated effort.

Senior software architect for an Enterprise Service Bus implementation for a government customer. As architect, I helped steer priorities toward service enablement criteria as an emerging SOA effort. I built a WSDL-First Maven archetype using HTTP and JMS for Servicemix-CXF for easier adoption of the Servicemix framework for developers building business service offerings. I worked w/ the team to arrive at orchestration patterns in terms of service assembly design leveraging "separation of concerns." Technologies used on the project include Apache Servicemix, Iona Fuse, XML, XSD, XQuery, XPath, Groovy, Drools, EIP, Camel, DOM, SAX, XStream, Spring Framework, Java. In addition, prototyped integration of Amberpoint Service Level Monitoring mechanisms for the Servicemix product using both proxy and Amberpoint Observer (AOP) mechanisms for metrics collection.

In this position, I helped with HP's position on the NCES SOA Foundation proposal, managing the lab for the competitive bid portion. I supplied infrastructure design and costing for SOA framework to include Progress Sonic ESB / Sonic MQ and F5 Big-IPs. I coached Big-IP usage for virtual pooling and SSL offload, enabling the Booz Allen / HP / Mirius solution to reach the 2-year performance criteria at the point of the competitive bid demonstration. I also managed the specification and installation of a HP BL460 blade center solution. Finally, as with the SOA team, came up to speed on particulars with the Systinet 2.5 Registry / Repository and Mercury Business Activity Center / Site Scope product offerings.
