Software manager for product development of Leapster and Fly products. Leapster development used custom and 3rd party audio codes, porting of a 3rd party OS, and Macromedia Flash on an embedded system. Fly included ICR (character recognition), text-to-speech, and Anoto image processing integration on a very low power consumption educational toy.Both projects were ground-up development from concept through production. Both involved new asic cpus, embedded firmware, operating system, network, and multi-media drivers, vendor software integration, and support for multiple application development teams.

EPatterns applied complex event processing technology developed at Stanford University in a business process management system. The initial system focused on authoring exceptions to a business process and notifying people by email, primarily in environments where companies have integrated their business applications, but need to monitor the result. The full system included a graphical tool for composing business process architectures and included custom languages for integrating applications and monitoring the conformance of the players with the behavior described in the business architecture.Built team to 10 members, including two managers. Responsible for thick- and thin-client front end to the enterprise product. Managed 3rd party, Cooper Interaction Design, in the product’s interface design. The product included JSPs and swing components connected with J2EE and JMX servers.

Developed software under contract for companies: Intuit (QuickBooks features for business accounting), Sun (JavaStation UI prototypes), Metaphor (development and enhancement of software for a data interpretation system), IDEO (design and development of embedded systems for an underwater autonomous vehicle), Applied Scanning Technology (development of graphical user interface software for an industrial application), Explore Technology (development of interactive, edu-tainment game cartridge on a proprietary platform for the home consumer market).

ICTV developed software and hardware for interactive cable TV. The system enabled a cable operator to deploy interactive applications, like Video On Demand and Home Shopping, over hybrid fiber coax cable systems.As Director and VP of Software, led the growth of the department to 22 developers including five managers. We were responsible for the development of a multimedia computer (MPEG/MP3 decompression), interactive application development, backoffice database, and firmware for a two-way communicative analog settop. As the project progressed from design to implementation to deployment, responsibility and emphasis moved from set up of infrastructure to development to operations. My project management focus was lastly on coordination of the ICTV and cable company’s operations teams, working towards the official cable trial start.Other broad responsibilities included the engineering budget and frequent project review presentations with the cable customer and partners.

Applied Scanning Technology develops and produces proprietary hardware and customized software for camera-based vision systems used for industrial automation.In charge of all software development, including budgeting, staffing, implementation, technical specifications, customer installations, and field service. Introduced state-of-the-art engineering practices for image correlation techniques, serial communications protocols, networking product specifications, value-based optimization algorithms, graphics drivers, and graphical user interfaces.

Flexible Manufacturing Systems produces control software for multi-AGV (automatic guided vehicle) material handling systems.Responsible for departmental staffing, standards, personnel, project specifications and schedules, as well as technical contributions that included heuristics for vehicle scheduling, proprietary network serial drivers, and modification of C-ISAM package for TCP/IP sockets.

KLA Instruments produces vision-based inspection equipment for the semiconductor industry.Managed development and implementation of Database Conversion System (for image processing; i.e., scaling, translation, merging, and quantization of large pattern files) and an Inspection Station Controller (a microprocessor-based, real-time controller). Both projects included technical and personnel management of software engineers, coordination of customer meetings, authoring of release specifications, release planning meetings, design reviews, and employee appraisals. Other contributions included developing an iRMX disk device driver, a bootstrap program, an off-line menu driven system for data storage and analysis of photomask inspection results, software interfacing to a UNIX DBMS, and serial communications software.
