Design Engineer And Business AnalystAusten Bioinnovation Institute In Akron Jan 2014 - Aug 2014Akron, OhAusten Bioinnovation Institute of Akron (ABIA) is a collaboration of Akron area hospitals, FirstEnergy, the Knight Foundation, and University of Akron. The partnership’s goal is to shorten time from idea to commercialization of new technologies and products by bringing together world-class scientists, physicians, engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs in biomedical products and polymer science. As Design Engineer and Business Analyst, I worked in the Product Innovation and Commercialization Division (PICD) focusing on: (1) medical device product design / development, and, (2) market analysis for new business concepts. I enjoyed the challenge, exploration and innovation involved in working on the evolution of medical products from initial concept, to design refinement, to regulatory approval, toward finished product market entry. This involved gaining a deep understanding of competitive devices and surgical procedures, taking concepts through a series of rapid prototypes, designing and modeling, testing using Solidworks, and creating test pieces for assessment by physicians.I served as ABIA’s primary contact point for the Akron Children's Medical campus, providing support for new concepts. Ideas were evaluated by creating a progression plan including engineering feasibility, market interest and competitive landscape.I was also charged with creating ABIA’s first-ever internal Quality Management System governing day-to-day PICD operations. The goal was to build and implement a system controlling operations, testing, and inspection of all procedures and products. This required a deep understanding of the entire ABIA working process. My position was eliminated after funding losses resulted in several rounds of layoffs. I am grateful for the learning opportunities and experiences I had during my time with Austen BioInnovation. -
