Long Term Planning Engineer
Long Term Planning - Mining Engineer-In-Training
As a long-term planning mining engineer-in-training at Kidd operations my main responsibilities are updating and maintaining: the master mine schedule, the mine reserve/resource databases and data tracking. The life-of-mine schedule is maintained through the use of the enhanced production scheduler (EPS) software which tracks all past, present and future mine activities through the use of a massive Gantt chart. Using this software I am responsible for adding and updating activities to the schedule for all future activities that have not yet been added which is then further refined by the production engineering (short-term planning) group. I also provide guidance where required to the design and production engineering group to aid in decision-making that may affect the performance of the overall schedule. The mine reserve data is tracked using primarily Microsoft Excel and AutoCAD and Amine applications. I am responsible for updating all relevant data for the ore reserve stope shapes and resultant data through excel for reference by other groups at Kidd Operations. I am also responsible for creating and updating the reserve stope shapes in AutoCAD/Amine as well as basic 3D designs for mine drifting as a basis for the mine design group to refine further. I also provide guidance where required to the mine design group to aid in decision-making that involves stope and mine design shapes that may affect the performance of the overall schedule.Various databases based mostly in Microsoft Excel and in Microsoft Access are used to track historical data which is used for future decision making and providing performance reports. Data is also kept up to date for monthly reporting purposes.Other minor duties include providing guidance to the long term engineering technician, providing general mining input and guidance during planning meetings throughout the week and responding to and providing info on any long-term related processes to other groups.
Production Engineering (Short Term Planning) - Mining Engineer-In-Training
As a production engineering (short-term planning) mining engineer-in-training my main responsibilities were: providing, maintaining and providing guidance for a weekly plan for the operations group, maintaining and detailing the mine schedule with a 3 month outlook in the EPS software and providing deadlines for documentation and survey work required for associated activities in the schedule. All production engineering responsibilities revolved around the regular tasks for a longhole drilling mining operation including: rehab, development, cable bolt drilling and installation, raiseboring and production drilling, loading and blasting, mucking, paste and/or waste fill and various construction activities. Two others had the same role as myself and responsibilities were divided equally among us by activity type with the responsibilities rotating between each member of the team. This resulted in at least six months experience with each activity type over my term. Maintaining and providing guidance on the weekly plan was a daily occurrence which included inputting actual values from the previous days activities and adjusting the coming days activities based on performance as well as equipment breakdowns. Maintaining and detailing the mine schedule with a 3 month outlook in the EPS software was performed on a weekly basis where information regarding activities would be inputted from related final approved documentation. Actual data tracked for the week would also be input into EPS from the daily tracking in excel.During this role also received training for the operation of small remotely piloted aircraft systems (e.g. drones, UAV's..) under Transport Canada. This training was for use in stockpile estimation on surface using Pix4D software and the use of drones in the underground environment.
Mine Design - Mining Engineer-In-Training
As a mine design engineer-in-training my main responsibilities were: producing documents used for development, raiseboring, drilling and blasting processes using the AutoCAD software with the Amine plug-in software, reviewing of survey data such as CMS (Cavity Monitoring System) scans or boretraking (gyroscopic survey) of drill holes and providing reports, and reviewing the designs created by my peers of my group. These prints were then to be approved by the senior engineers to be distributed to the operations group in a timely manner. Outside of the documents assigned to myself I was also responsible for the sequencing and timing of blasts for documentation created by the engineering technologists. Some of my minor duties included: designing infrastructure in the mine not associated with regular mining tasks, aiding in the development of standards for mine design activities and helping the surveying group underground as required while they did work for related mine design tasks.Noteworthy achievements include writing code utilizing AutoLisp for new AutoCAD tools to reduce time required to create drill books and blast letter while reducing mistakes. Project involvement included: orepass decommissioning, new orepass/raise designs and renewing design procedures.
Mining Engineer Intern
Responsible for various roles throughout a 16-month term as a co-op student at the underground gold mine, Timmins West Complex. Job duties included: ventilation, surveying, aiding in mine scheduling, designing and issuing mine design prints, daily reporting, long hole blast design and data-tracking. Thorough experience in a technical mining position with extensive use of Microsoft Excel and Amine software for Auto-CAD. Performed underground survey work on a weekly basis and proficient in the underground survey process from start to finish. A month term was spent with underground blasting and construction crews to gain further underground experience and safe procedures in the underground environment.
