At the NRC I was asked to take on a large scale modelling and simulation project on high altitude airships. I had to run, modify and write MATLAB simulation software for high altitude airships to determine how long photovoltaic-powered airships could remain aloft in the Canadian Arctic. I summarized the results of this study in an internal NRC report.I also had the opportunity to specify requirements and obtain quotes for various flight sensors, to complete a technical assessment of a simulator company for government funding approval, to calibrate equipment for pilot control force measurements, and to complete project financial assessments.

I was fortunate to spend a co-op term with the Emergency Science and Technology Section of Environment Canada. With fellow students, I conducted a number of small scale lab tests on oil properties that affect oil-in-water dispersion. To do this, I had to operate state-of-the-art instruments, including optical tensiometers and gas chromatographs. I became proficient in lab work and gained confidence in technical communication, which allowed me to present results to senior researchers, to write standard operating procedures, and to train guest researchers and fellow students. The data I generated is being used to develop mathematical models which predict how spilled oil behaves in the water column.
