About Curt Shields

My father is one of the handiest, craftiest people I know - drop him on a desert island with two packs of bubble gum and a hairpin, and two weeks later he’ll be sailing home in a bespoke yacht like a prince. Want to know how he does it? Keep reading.I like to tell people that my father’s greatest strength isn’t the things he knows how to do; it’s his methodical, systematic way of solving problems he hasn’t faced before. And since I inherited his handy genes in full, I’ll tell you exactly how he and I make things happen, and the career I’ve made of that.Rule No. 1: You'll never be THE expert (there's always someone smarter, never assume you have all the answers). Rule No. 2: Never let that stop you from trying (they may be smarter, but can they work harder?).I'm extraordinarily lucky in the work I've been involved with; it's been an education without equal in both existing and new construction across commercial, industrial, institutional, educational, and hotel/resort market sectors. I spent five years at an engineering consulting firm, primarily conducting property condition assessments, then later branching out into structural diagnostics and building envelope testing. I became familiar with a broad range of construction methods and mishaps across the country, from San Francisco to New York City. Then, another five years in a general contractor's quality management group, where I was tasked with providing a broad range of QA/QC services to wildly varied stakeholders - architects and designers on one side of the table, superintendents and subcontractors on the other, and I'm in the middle making it all work in preconstruction/design, during construction, and post-construction/warranty phases. The common thread in all this? Digging deep into the data, apply strong critical thinking skills, and soaking up every bit of experience and knowledge available, with the ultimate goal of strengthening my capabilities in serving an organization's needs.Specialties: Building envelope/enclosure diagnostics, commissioning, contract document peer review, detail development, structural diagnostics, forensic investigation, nondestructive testing, property condition assessments, PCAs

Listed skills include Autocad, Engineering, Microsoft Excel, Cad, and 4 others.
