As a principal in PXT I set the overall technical direction for the Learning Science org, AET Central Services, and all tech orgs in GTMC Journeys. In total, documenting the current state of 13 products and systems and their existing faults, the ideal future state of those systems to meet customer needs, and a set of actionable milestones to incrementally execute from current state to ideal state. As part of this process drove for simplicity within each complex domain analyzing and prioritizing work to achieve business goals while including work to improve and maintain high tech standards for operations. Along with this process I act as a hub for technical information for the org. I advise my VP and directors on technical concerns relating to both systems and engineering culture. I mentor, teach, and coach over 150 software engineers/teams located in dev offices across multiple countries in North America and Europe.

Built out new Amazon Web Services Commerce Platform office in Manhattan, New York. Owned tech for the deprecation of an internal UI tool for managing access and vending customer data to actors based on a least privilege access control model.- Designed components for the front end display, back end services, and access control systems. Broke out those components to be owned and implemented by engineers across two teams.- Implemented initial back end service, deployment infrastructure, and integration testing.- Mentored key engineers on both teams to ensure successful execution of all components.- Designed and implemented in the Attribute Based Access Control system which would allow users to model the type of access required by types of actors and then enforced that access at runtime when an actor visited the UI.

Led project to model the concept of a person in the Alexa and Amazon retail technical ecosystem.- Upset the traditional concept of an actor for amazon retail systems as they modeled identity based on a credential set not a unique person.- Worked as a peer with multiple principal engineers across Amazon Identity and Alexa Identity acting as a mediator to gain consensus on the model that would work for all stakeholders.- Modelled backward from the customer and how the user thinks about their interactions with the system to ensure our design didn't just work technically, but was usable by real people.

First engineer and tech leader for new org at Amazon working on internationalizing Amazon retail to new countries in innovative ways to cut cost and time to market.- Owned the technical design and was responsible for it's execution spanning the breadth of 92 teams across all of Amazon retail.- Documented and worked with multiple principal and senior principal engineers across all retail orgs to validate and gain consensus on the technical design and execution plan.- Led the Samurai organization of tech leaders across my org and our sister org mentoring more junior senior engineers and putting in place artifacts and standards for both orgs to ensure a high performing tech culture and software excellence.- Wore many hats from Product Manager, Technical Program Manager, Software Development Manager, and Senior engineer as we were a new org and I adapted to do what was necessary to make us successful based on the changing circumstances around us.

Cultural ambassador of Amazon during the acquisition of a company. After the acquisition was considered a success, promoted to Senior Software Development Engineer and acted as a Site Lead at the new office.- Ensured the cultural values of Amazon were adopted, accepted, and incorporated into the operational and hiring practices of the new office.- Redesigned the entire core transaction data model for the Amazon Local Commerce transaction processing system creating a more modular, extensible, distributed design that leveraged both synchronous and asynchronous systems working together to meet high SLAs.- Designed, coordinated, and helped implement breaking apart the Amazon Local Commerce monolithic service architecture into a more maintainable and extensible service oriented architecture. Required coordination of the design across all Amazon Local Commerce locations to make sure everyone was on board with the new design and helping with its rollout.- Mentor developers on design and provide design reviews for all development teams within Amazon Local Commerce, including teams in the Seattle and Bangalore locations. This includes both design review meetings as well as 1 on 1 mentorship sessions working with developers.- Recruit new and internal transfer engineers from other offices to grow the new San Francisco location while maintaining a high quality bar for engineering.

Started as a Junior Software Development Engineer on the Gift Cards Team. Was promoted to Software Developer, acted as Team Lead and Architect.- Began work on the front end UI engineering team. With no prior familiarity, quickly developed high-level proficiency in technologies including JavaScript and Perl Mason.- Became the senior engineer on team two months after joining Amazon. Was able to act independently and still deliver on business goals despite lack of experience and mentorship.- Influence expanded from just performing design reviews for the front end UI team, to performing UX design reviews for the UX Design team, requirements reviews with Product Management, project plan reviews with Program Managers, and design reviews for all of the back end Gift Card development teams.- Actively worked to remove technical debt and deprecate legacy systems. Deprecated over 50% of the legacy Perl/Mason code base by the time I left the team. Migrated a significant amount of the systems to Java which is more in line with the rest of the company, was more maintainable, and was easier to hire engineers for.- Worked heavily with teams across Amazon to coordinate and align the design direction of the Gift Card systems with the overall technical direction of the company. This included Gift Cards being on the front end of technical migrations, which lowered the operational overhead for the Gift Card systems and allowed them to leverage new functionality.- Designed a strong, modular, decoupled overall ideal architecture for the whole Gift Certificates space. Had the design reviewed and signed off on by Principal engineers. Began initial steps toward development pulling in iterative evolutions to the existing systems within already prioritized projects which would bring concrete business value.
