For three decades I have immersed myself in R&D, management and entrepreneurial environments, with extensive experience in IP networking software development, web-scale distributed systems and the Internet. As one of America Online's early employees, I wrote AOL's first Internet gateway. Later I helped architect and develop AOL Instant Messenger. During my tenure as Director of AIM Host Development, I designed and implemented key components of the system and co-authored patented technology for AIM.I've worked with numerous startups and early-stage ventures, in industries ranging from food service to construction to music, in roles ranging from investor and member of the Board of Directors to programmer. As important as the successes in these early stage ventures, including significant liquidity events for some of them, I have had my share of failures.My skills and experience fall into three broad categories:TechnicalI am a veteran developer and solutions architect, with battle scars from building big, distributed, web-scale systems. I can roll up my sleeves and do full-stack web development, from the database through the UI. I understand milliseconds, L1 cache, TCP three-way handshake, distributed hash databases, cloud systems, and a laundry list of other tech, both esoteric and common, that are hard won from decades of work.People, Process and CultureI build the teams that build great products. I build the processes that support the teams that build the great products. I am conversant in various approaches to software development, and I can evaluate and communicate the tradeoffs between them.Executive / ManagerialI get shit done, leading through example and respect. I have built and run multimillion dollar budgets, run large teams, pitched to VCs and presented to Boards of Directors (and served on several). I know how to read an income statement.
