I am an experienced academic copyeditor and proofreader. I work with clients to prepare well-written academic documents that are ready for submission. I have a diverse client base that spans an array of disciplines and career stages, and I provide edits and constructive feedback on all types of academic document. Most commonly, however, I help clients prepare publishable journal articles for peer review and grant applications. With 20 years’ experience in academia, a science-based doctorate (PhD) and numerous published journal articles and book chapters, I have extensive expertise in academic writing. I readily understand new technical content and clients remark positively on my in-depth pre-submission manuscript reviews and constructive feedback across the spectrum of subjects. I provide corrections and suggestions as well as intelligent feedback on document structure, supporting evidence, and flow of logic. I often work directly with clients to improve academic writing skills and am an asset to those writing in English as a second language. I really enjoy helping clients writing in English as a second language get their key messages across in a clear an concise way, and it's always amazing how many beneficial tweaks can be made to even the smoothest of drafts.I've been in and around the academic game for a fair while now, and I've got first hand experience of the ups, downs and challenges of academic writing and publishing. I know how time-pressured and frustrating it can be, and how the need to publish can become overbearing. I'm here to help. I know the ropes and the requirements, and I've dealt with enough pedantic 'Reviewer 2's' to know how to placate them, even before submission. I approach manuscript editing from the perspective of a reviewer or the intended audience, and my clients appreciate the detailed feedback. A light copy edit or proofread is always an option though! In terms of dissertations, my approach is a little different to papers for peer review. I stick to the ethical code and ensure that the writing is all the student's. I have supervised honours and master's projects, and can confidently guide you through the minefield of academic dissertation writing. I know that it's a challenge — the rules are hard to remember at first and there are so many sections that kind of seem the same! I'll nudge you along with detailed and constructive feedback plus example text so you can build your own first class dissertation. If you're still having a read then you may be interested to know that I have written, edited and reviewed a lot of research grants, fellowships and funding proposals, including big government ones here in the UK and USA. Let me know if you'd like some feedback, copyediting or proofreading on yours. Orcid Identifier: 0000-0002-5903-995X Show less

The focus of Seeking Survivors was to monitor, sample and survey the corals and coral reefs in and around Sector Marino, ACG’s marine protected area, and to better understand coral immune system dynamics. As Lead Scientist, I brought together a diverse and collaborative international team of volunteers, students, local operators and donors to achieve out charitable objectives, which focussed on research and public outreach. I designed, planned and undertook the field work in Costa Rica, and established an alliance with the National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth, UK to further explore coral immunity. With the tireless help of a team of students, we established an anemone farm of clonal Aiptasia and designed and funded a new coral wet lab that was to be used to conduct controlled experiments to explore anemone immune dynamics in response to adverse conditions. Experiments planned were based on the theory proposed in my opinion article Immunity and the Coral Crisis, https://www.nature.com/articles/s42003-018-0097-4 Unfortunately, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic we were unable to conduct our activities and we took the difficult decision to close Seeking Survivors. We have recently published an article on some of the data Seeking Survivors collected, which highlights the impact of cold water and harmful algal blooms on coral reef collapse in the Tropical Eastern Pacific.
