I worked part-time in various departments as a sort of substitute team member.

I researched and developed sustainable and responsible food waste management systems for local food service operators from restaurants to schools and grocery stores. I worked with partners to divert methane-emitting food waste from landfills by donating to hungry people, composting, feeding livestock, and via other recovery processes.

I taught "mad science" and world culture to 12 Washington Middle School students. I created curricula and lesson plans that made after school learning fun, engaging, and hands-on. One project involved developing design thinking with the goal of creation instead of desruction ("blowing things up!") where I taught students how to define a problem, brainstorm ideas for solutions, design, test, and finally evaluate results. Using simple materials like newspaper and tape, the project was to construct a protective capsule around an egg that would prevent it from breaking when dropped from approximately seven feet. Another lesson saw students bring a culturally representative dish from home to share with other students along with a short oral presentation about the dish and its significance.

I taught English as a foreign language to over 70 students as well as 22 of the school’s faculty and executive administration. • As coordinator of the business majors, I taught research methods, created quizzes, speaking tests, and the term project – an interview with a notable public figure. • For the speech contest, I assisted the department head in selecting topics, helped participants draft their speeches, and coached them in their delivery. • Time outside of classroom instruction was spent lesson planning collaboratively with other teachers, and grading assignments.
