About Chris Glaeser-Yalen

"So how do you go from being a 7th-grade History teacher to a Machine Learning Engineer?"It's a question I get a lot, but it’s actually the wrong question to ask. Allow me to explain:See, I’ve always had a passion for computers, science, tech, you name it. I remember in middle school opening up a friend’s broken PS2 (which felt like a dangerous and forbidden act for something so expensive) to try and fix it. I also remember the shouts of joy that erupted from us once we finally got it working. But despite my interest in making a career out of computer science or engineering, there was a problem: I stunk at math. Or so I thought. Because of this, I ruled out a career in a STEM field for a long time. It just wouldn’t happen, not for me.Then my mentor during my first year of teaching shared something with me. She said part of mentoring teenagers is teaching them confidence, grit, and passion. That no doors are closed to you as long as you are willing to put in the time and energy; to be open to new experiences and challenges. It really hit me.And just like that – after nearly 12 years, I finally sat down and had a conversation with my thirteen-year old self. The next thing I knew, I took on a data-focused role in my organisation. I learned how to code in my spare time. I pushed myself to re-learn math that had intimidated me in high school and college. I got accepted to my top-choice master’s program for data science. Now my skills reflect the things I am most passionate about. I program in Python and SQL. I deploy end-to-end data pipelines with Terraform and Docker on AWS. I develop and evaluate Machine Learning models and their predictions to capture real value for businesses. So all that being said, what is the question you should ask instead of the one we started with? This one:How did this Machine Learning Engineer become a 7th-grade History teacher?

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Leadership, Research, Editing, and 32 others.
