  • West Jordan Community Foundation
General Coordinator, Wild West Jordan Playground
West Jordan Community Foundation Mar 2004 - Nov 2007
    West Jordan, Utah
Served as the visionary and General Coordinator for the Wild West Jordan Playground, a community-built facility. Responsible for the management of nine volunteer sub-committees comprising more than fifty individuals who collectively raised $425,000 in cash and in-kind donations. Our core team recruited nearly 6,000 volunteers to donate at least four hours of time per person to build the largest playground in the State of Utah in a ten-day period. Provided grant writing services, recruiting, pitching businesses for various types of participation, earned media, and many other challenging tasks in a short time period and under extreme pressure. This experience taught me the skill of community organizing. Learning how to create a local social movement (pre-social media) and drawing people in to give their time and energy when you cannot offer them anything more than a thanks. No University or job can teach this skill. It is uniquely and genuinely earned by a select few.Although this was a volunteer rather than paid position, the funding, time, activities, risks and tasks were absolutely real-world with real potential penalties for failure. Accomplishing this project would have been difficult enough with paid staff, achieving it through 100% volunteer effort was an unprecedented community success. It remains, to date, the largest single volunteer project in the history of the city. "All big things in this world are achieved by people who are naïve and have an idea that is obviously impossible."-- Frank RichardsContinued to serve on the West Jordan Community Foundation Board, a 501c3 charity formed to facilitate this project, until 2015.
