Site Reliability Engineering ArchitectBungie Oct 2022 - Aug 2024Bellevue, Wa, UsLead of the Cloud Administration team, in charge of "all things cloud" at Bungie.- Responsible for many architecture reviews, financial reviews, and approvals of designs of systems that interacted with/used AWS.- Implemented, and worked with Sony to create "cloudPlay" courses at Bungie. Allowing engineers to train up on the Cloud faster than ever before.- Architected, and Deployed a brand new "Global Network" for the cloud, reworking how fundamental network components in AWS were done, and interacted with Bungie's Datacenters.- Developed a new user tooling application CLI/Browser Extension to allow storing AWS Credentials securely, supporting many "fine-grained" access roles, and building in support for auto-refreshing of credentials, and role discovery.- Architected, and Deployed a brand new AWS Account & Organization strategy for managing AWS itself. Allowing Bungie to move to more accounts, provisioned quicker, with future plans to grow to Ephemeral Accounts.- Started implementing "FinOps" style tooling at Bungie, leading to identification of hundreds of thousands in savings plans, reservations, EDP negotiations, and rearchitectures to maximize savings on AWS. -

Not only helped deploy, and manage EnvoyProxy, but provided the highest uptime guarantee of any service Instructure had ever developed globally. Notable work includes:- Providing multiple fixes, including security related fixed to upstream EnvoyProxy as initial rollout took place.- Managing all the operational aspects of the deployment initially to hit the highest uptime Instructure ever required, and then trained the team on how they could keep this going so they still continue to hit their uptime goals easily.- Implemented multiple local development tools, and procedures to be able to "Live at Head" in Envoy without slowing the engineering team down at all, while still providing incredibly fast Envoy Builds. -
System AdministratorInstructure Feb 2016 - Mar 2019Salt Lake City, Utah, UsHelped manage one of the largest LMS's in the world, keeping it's 99.9% uptime globally, and also helped many other teams implement "DevOps", and be able to properly manage their services. Some notable projects worked on during this time were:- Deployment of "LiveEvents" a brand new way of delivering events to schools, implemented the core infrastructure for delivering these events, as well as an Amazon Kinesis based autoscaling solution to deal with load while still allowing cost effectiveness.- Helped provide operational guidelines, and trainings on how to properly due alerting, and monitoring allowing many teams that hated being on call to actually enjoying it.- Helped deploy, and manage multiple apps using a wide variety of tech stacks in a consistent, self service way using Ansible, and Terraform.- Implemented a Self-Service AutoScaling Kafka Architecture, that allowed for teams to send messages securely, and easier than ever before. -
Lead Support EngineerInstructure Sep 2015 - Nov 2018Salt Lake City, Utah, UsThe support engineering team is the team that builds, and manages automation for empowering the support departments at Instructure. Everything from automatically assigning tickets to bugs so customers would be automatically informed when bugs were fixed with no human interaction, and so engineering could see how many tickets a bug was blocking. To providing live dashboards so managers could at a glance see who was on phone calls, who was on a break, and more.Specific Projects worked on during this time were: - Creating a new automated deployment system for all the tools support used, that replaced an old manual "SSH, and Copy Files" over manual deployment that was incredibly error prone. - Rewrote large chunks of the frontend from using Ruby on Rails forms, to a much more user friendly ReactJS based solution. - Rewrote core components as Rust based microservices that could be shared by other internal products that are still heavily used today. - Handling large scale phone system switchovers and rewriting the systems with a tight deadline. -
