About Cynthia Scott

I strive to listen, learn, and act to make things better. Early in my career, I helped create a successful digital media educational center for the California Community College system. Then I helped transform lynda.com into a global online learning company that was acquired by LinkedIn. I like transformations. I’ve worked with technology companies, small businesses and nonprofits to generate new growth. I admire people who are natural teachers because they tend to lead through a generosity of spirit—sharing knowledge requires the ability to both see the gap and build a useful bridge. That’s what I strive for. Who I Am: Creative and insightful communicator with a collaborative leadership style. What I Do: Observe, listen, learn, and act to make things better than I find them. Synthesize seemingly unrelated parts to solve problems in original ways. What I Want: To create. To invent new products and services to make the world a better place. To surround myself with exceptional people and work at a high-level of artistic and technical excellence. Specialties: Strategy, vision, leadership, communication, innovation, content development, reinventing education, customer focus, learning and applying knowledge, developing community

  • Lynda.Com
    Director Of Content, Business Segment
    Lynda.Com Nov 2011 - Jun 2013
    Santa Barbara, California Area
    • Developed new content division on business skills• Hired high performance team• Tapped to inform and advise outside investors• Presented at the company’s quarterly meeting• Pitched strategic plans to the executive team• Developed annual publishing roadmaps As Director of Content for the business segment, I was responsible for a key strategic component for the company’s overall growth. At this time, enterprise revenue comprised 30% of overall revenue and was growing at 50% Y/Y. My objective was to rapidly build out courses in business skills and tools. To meet these objectives, I realigned the segment. I evaluated authors and course publication plans, and redirected the team towards production of courses on negotiation, sales, conflict management, presentations, search engine optimization, and brand development. Over a nine-month period, we diplomatically completed existing contracts and at the same time acquired new authors, wrote new courses, and cultivated new production and animation styles to better serve the company. In addition, we continued to meet the needs of individual consumers by delivering productivity tools, plus courses on career management and self-optimization. For both the enterprise market, and individual consumers, we focused on high-demand courses and a 3-5 year publishing plan.In April 2015, LinkedIn acquired lynda.com for $1.5 billion, and in June 2016, Microsoft announced the acquisition of LinkedIn for $26.2 billion.
  • Lynda.Com
Senior Content Manager For The Web & Interactive Segment
    Lynda.Com Jul 2011 - Nov 2011
    Santa Barbara, California Area
    • Published consistently top-ranked courses • Co-developed the First 60-day on-boarding plans• Trained and mentored new hires to the Content team• Advised and coached summer internsAs Senior Content Manager for the web and interactive design segment, I successfully recruited and hired a new associate content manager and a key new staff author, allowing us to increase the number of Web + Interactive courses published by 60% year over year. This included developing and implementing an aggregation strategy that allowed us to publish an additional 10 courses on jQuery. This strategy paved the way for publishing far more courses than we could with our internal production resources. As a result, we rapidly built out our jQuery offerings, a key topic area that had been missing from our content library. This aggregation process also served as a model for other departments to grow their course offerings. In addition, recognizing that my manager was being asked to take on additional leadership responsibilities for the company, I volunteered to train and mentor all new hires to the Content team and co-developed our First 60-day plans to ensure successful and focused on-boarding.
  • Lynda.Com
Content Manager For The Web & Interactive Segment,
    Lynda.Com Jan 2010 - Jul 2011
    Santa Barbara, California Area
    • Analyzed and realigned content to serve member needs• Acquired outside authors who became company leaders• Served on hiring committees during period of rapid growth• Built bridges with team members in different departments When I took on the leadership role for the web and interactive content segment, views and viewers of this flagship content area were flat and were showing early warning signs of a potential decline in growth. My initial analysis revealed that our current offerings were too focused on Adobe tools such as Dreamweaver and Flash, and that we had fallen behind while the industry was shifting to Open Source solutions and frameworks. To turn this around, I connected with thought leaders, subject matter experts and members to develop and execute a balanced content strategy that would serve the needs of web designers. My key decisions to quickly build out depth on the leading CMS frameworks (WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla), HTML5 and CSS revitalized the segment, earning us accolades from our members and drove a steady increase in views and viewers to reverse the prior trend. In my first year in the role, I doubled the number authors in this segment by recruiting 15 new authors, and focused on building our WordPress courses. As a result, our WordPress courses went to lead the company in usage year after year.
  • San Diego Community College District
    Regional Center Director
San Diego Community College District Aug 2003 - Dec 2009
    Greater San Diego Area
    • Successfully championed a community college computer-training center• Wrote and managed over $1.8 million in grants to support job training certificate programs• Wrote new curriculum on digital media skills• Mapped out and wrote content for an informational website about professional development for community college teachers at ten local colleges• Built regional relationships among community college faculty, staff, deans, high schools and employers and connected them to a statewide community college networkIn this role, I transformed a small local computer-training center into a regional powerhouse for workforce training. Through leveraged partnerships, we built a series of training programs in design, animation, web design, video production, web server technologies, and business skills. Our nine-month multimedia-training program was so attractive that people camped out the night before in order to enroll. During this time, I also worked with Lynda Weinman, the co-founder of lynda.com, to invent and prototype the first multi-user account at lynda.com. As a result, our center tested the first group accounts in education, which served over 200 teachers at ten community colleges in the Southern California region. Later, group accounts served as a foundation for lynda.com’s growth in academia, business, and government sales, and contributed 30% to annual revenue.
