About Cindy Peyton

“The one thing I will never be is a teacher!” Yes, I said those words as a high school senior during a discussion of future careers. What I didn’t know then was that I'm a teacher at heart! Moving people forward–from uncertainty to confidence–both drives and fuels me. Through my 25 years in education, I’ve worked as a teacher, curriculum developer, educator mentor, and workshop instructor, and I love all of those roles. For me, it’s all about helping turn on that metaphorical light bulb for learners and educators who need a step-by-step process and scaffolded instruction to move to the next level. One of my favorite things is guiding people through collaborative, creative brainstorming sessions, helping them use what they know to create and communicate the content they need for instruction. I gained a reputation as a creative teacher by developing what I dubbed “extravaganzas,” which are highly interactive direct-learning experiences. I especially enjoy equipping educators to create their own innovative experiences and programs that motivate and inspire learners. I recently launched Elevate Academic Solutions with something for each of the key stakeholders in education. For students, I offer private ELA tutoring and in-person or online ELA courses for college-bound learners. For parents, I offer individual consultations about educational options. For teachers, I started Elevate Educator Training as a vehicle for my professional development training and mentoring activities. My current workshop “Planning with a Big Picture Mindset” helps professionals who have the content and experience to share with learners, but no teaching or planning skills to put their knowledge into a coherent, unified course. While my own subject area expertise is the humanities, my process works for instructors in business and the sciences as well. Reach out if you are an individual, school, co-op, or business needing the following:*Teacher/instructor workshops and training*Creative course design and curriculum enhancement*In-person and online consultations

  • Institute For Cultural Communicators
    Mid-Atlantic Area Coordinator
Institute For Cultural Communicators Jul 2019 - Jun 2021
    Murfreesboro, Tn
ICC is a global student leadership and communication organization that is primarily volunteer led. In my role as the area coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic region, I organized local training events, spoke on a variety of platforms, presented workshops to adult coaches, received leadership training via weekly meetings and LMS (Schoology), worked in teams via Slack and actively promoted ICC in my area. I worked collaboratively with a small area team, taking the lead on the following: ➢ Coordinated regional ICC Forensics Society tournament: recruited volunteers, trained staff, conducted staff prep meetings, supervised the event. ➢ Orchestrated regional 2019 fall conference: obtained venue, food vendors, and numerous volunteers; oversaw assistant coordinators; marketed and publicized the event to increase new attendance. ✶ I am proud to have received the Vision Award (monetary award for the area’s scholarship fund) for achieving the highest number of new conference registrations in 2019. ➢ Developed an online scholarship request and award process for the Mid-Atlantic area. ➢ Participated in international, collaborative online planning meetings with other area coordinators and global leaders via Zoom; supervised and trained an area leadership team and area chapter sponsors.Again, navigating Covid was not difficult because the global reach of ICC had already made us a Zoom savvy organization. Our entire global leadership team was perfectly positioned to pivot to an online platform. Just a few weeks before our 2020 tournament season, I worked with our leadership team to adapt our practices to an online format. Personally, I used my technical skills to adapt a round robin speech training event to an online platform for the Mid-Atlantic area in 2021, allowing students from all area chapters to receive feedback during the pandemic shutdown.
  • Crossroads Educational Co-Op, Inc.
    English Cadre Leader & Teacher
    Crossroads Educational Co-Op, Inc. Jul 2015 - Jun 2021
    Lutherville, Md
I served our local homeschooling community in a variety of ways during my years at Crossroads. I am most proud of the continuity I was able to bring to their English program by leading a collaborative effort to create a scope and sequence for the 6th-12th grade courses. I personally designed 3 honors level courses: World Literature, American Literature, and Middle School Comp & Lit 2. I also organized and ran a Research Writing course in which students completed a formal 15-page academic paper. All of the literature courses were designed to include the following: ➢ A range of literary genres and activities to develop solid critical reading skills with specific focus on annotation, literary techniques, and thematic analysis. ➢ Integration of technology to develop research, presentation, and online collaboration skills. ➢ Level-appropriate writing instruction covering a variety of genres to develop critical planning, interpretive, and analytical thinking skills. When Covid hit in 2019, my classes did not miss even one week of instruction because I already had access to a Zoom account and experience at running online meetings. My strong computer skills enabled me to move my Microsoft Office documents and presentations to Google’s collaborative platform using Drive, Docs, and Slides. I taught students and their parents how to share their Google docs and transfer ownership for online submissions and was easily able to provide instructive editing comments. Also used an LMS (Schoology) to communicate grades and assignments.
  • Self-Employed
    Home School Educator
    Self-Employed Sep 2006 - Jun 2015
I put my teaching expertise to the important work of educating my own two students. This work involved coordinating schedules and teaching students of differing ages, selecting and acquiring curricula, adapting instructional methods based on student needs, organizing numerous educational field trips and hands-on instructional experiences, and maintaining accurate detailed records in accordance with approved oversight organization. My love of collaboration and community led me to organize a book club for home school teachers, which evolved into a supportive, sharing community in which honesty and trust were paramount. I added guest speakers, curriculum sharing nights, and more to meet needs that arose. The friendships gained through that group remain alive and active today. My family also joined a small five-family learning group built around a core curriculum through which we explored art, music, creative writing, and more. I organized agendas for several weekend “ultimate field trips” to historical locations on the East Coast. For me, the best part was bringing my love for a good educational “extravaganza” to this group. We created some unbelievable adventures for our students. Here’s a little taste: ✶ CIA Spy Recruitment Training ✶ A Lewis & Clark Expedition ✶ A Battle of Baltimore Living History Experience
