Cynthia Thomas Calvert, principal of Work+Family Insight, helps employers manage employees who are pregnant, parenting, and caring for family members. Her expertise includes pregnancy and lactation accommodation; attracting and retaining caregiving employees; reducing unconscious bias; implementing effective flexible work and family leave programs; and creating inclusive workplace cultures. Examples of her work include helping HR create and implement initiatives to attract and retain caregiving employees, designing training for supervisors, developing solutions for handling leaves of absence, briefings for HR and company lawyers about pregnancy accommodation laws and family responsibilities discrimination, and drafting and reviewing parental leave and flexible work policies. Cynthia is also the Senior Advisor at the Center for WorkLife Law, based at UC College of the Law SF. There, she has led groundbreaking studies of family responsibilities discrimination, pregnancy accommodation, professional advancement on flexible schedules, obstacles to successful implementation of flexible work programs, and the advancement of women lawyers. She also advises lawyers who are litigating pregnancy and caregiver discrimination cases. Cynthia has co-authored several books, including a legal treatise published by Bloomberg about family responsibilities discrimination and guides about flexible work for lawyers and law firms. She has been quoted in and written articles for numerous national publications, including the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, ABA Journal, HBR, and Time Magazine. She is a writer and frequent speaker, and practices employment law in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
