About Cynthia Yoder
I am an editor/coach for writers and entrepreneurs who want to develop their stories, blogs, books or other writings. My tailored, small-group courses draw on my 16 years of coaching individuals and teaching in formal settings as well as my life-long work as a writer/author.I draw on my experience writing feature stories and interviews about science and the arts for such places as Princeton University, Bristol Myers-Squibb, and New York’s landmark Cathedral of St. John the Divine. My coaching also draws on decades of mindfulness study and practices, which dovetails with writing in many ways.Growing up in a Mennonite family, I didn’t see our culture in the books I read. Sitting in a graduate literature class at Columbia University, I got inspired to change this. I pursued an MFA at Sarah Lawrence College, where author Barbara Probst Solomon became my mentor. Her guidance led to the publication of my memoir, Crazy Quilt Pieces of a Mennonite Life. It is one of the first modern memoirs published by a Mennonite-born woman.Publishing my memoir led to talks at places like Princeton University, Yale School of Divinity, the American Association of University Women, and Barnes and Noble. I’ve taught classes at Westchester Community College (SUNY), Bluffton University, OH, and Mercer County Community College, NJ; I’ve tutored graduate students on thesis writing at Sarah Lawrence College.Coaching individuals led to publishing my self-help book, Divine Purpose: Find the Passion Within. I also published a novel, Mennonite on the Edge: An Unlikely Romance. My stories appear in national magazines, including Next Avenue, LadyBug, NJ Monthly, and in the collection, Just Moms.I continue to offer leadership mentoring and coaching for entrepreneurs and other individuals. New in 2021: for those who are writing a narrative (memoir, OpEd, biography, etc.) and value professional instruction and editing, I hold writing classes via Zoom and email. My coaching and instruction draw on decades of experience as an author and public relations writer, as well as extensive study and practice of visualization and mindfulness. I hold an MFA in Writing from Sarah Lawrence College. The classes I offer are master-level classes which include peer and instructor feedback. I also work as a business consultant for Greenleaf Painters, LLC, one of the premier eco-friendly painting companies in the Princeton, NJ, region.
