As a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Lady Davis Institute, I am involved in the Bioportal biobank project, which aims to include over 12,000 patients. As a Laboratory Technician, I was responsible for supporting experiment preparation, which includes preparing solutions, consumables, and labels, as well as assisting in sample preparation and document review. In the blood bank, my duties were the following:• Registering and accessioning samples in the laboratory information system.• Preparing blood products, such as beriplex and specific coagulation factors, for administration.• Distributing blood products such as packed RBCs, plasma, and platelets.• Determining patients' blood types by testing manually and using the automated analyzer.• Performing manual antibody testing on pertinent patient samples.This position requires thorough attention to detail since one mistake could be lethal to the patient.

During this period, I completed five internships in various fields: Histopathology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Transfusion Sciences, and Core Lab. All of these internships took place within a hospital setting.In the Histopathology internship, I received comprehensive training across multiple benches, including grossing, embedding, microtomy, H&E stains, and special stains.In the Molecular Biology internship, I gained fundamental knowledge in PCR assays such as MRSA, VRE, and CRO assays.In the Microbiology Internship, I acquired skills across various benches, encompassing inoculation, sensitivity testing, MALDI, and analysis of urine, stool, sputum, pus, and blood cultures.During the Transfusion Sciences internship, I received extensive training in blood bank procedures, with a focus on manual techniques like antibody detection and titers. I also worked in blood product preparation, distribution, and sample registration.Finally, the Core Lab stage was divided into six weeks of biochemistry and four weeks of hematology. In biochemistry, I became proficient in the automation used for sample testing, and learned to sort and prioritize samples. I also received training in electrophoresis, blood gas analysis, and urinalysis (physical, chemical, and microscopic). In the hematology component, I became well-versed in operating the CBC machine, performing quality control, conducting coagulation tests, utilizing flow cytometry, and other hematological tests.These internships were a nourishing experience and I got complimented on my multitasking skills and the quality of my work.

During the summer of 2021, I worked as a Core Lab Extern Medical Technologist. My role encompassed various responsibilities over a span of nine weeks: one week as a clerk, four weeks in the test center, and three weeks in the send-out bench.As a clerk, I was responsible for entering crucial patient information and tests requested by physicians into the Laboratory Information System.In the test center, I served as a phlebotomist, efficiently drawing blood from patients and meticulously timing any tolerance tests.During my time in the send-out bench, my duties involved the preparation of patient samples destined for other laboratories within or outside of Québec. Additionally, I was responsible for sorting samples requiring specialized testing within our own lab.Through this experience, I honed my skills and became proficient in all three areas, maximizing efficiency and minimizing errors.
