Represents all clients participating in D.C. Superior Court's Drug Treatment Court. Conducts challenge hearings on drug testing results of expert witnesses regarding forensic toxicology and chemistry. Assist clients in navigating collateral consequences of convictions and access resources needed to successfully complete program. Advocate for individualized needs of clients in a standardized program. Defends client against removal proceedings. Prepare clients for and represent them at sentencing hearings. Baltimore City

Began by representing misdemeanor clients at the District and Circuit Court for Baltimore City under the continuous litigation model, trying both bench and jury trials with a focus on domestic violence cases. Manages a high-volume and fast-paced case load. Then assigned to the District Court Adult Drug Treatment Court, handling admission hearings, motions to resolve inter-jurisdictional cases, sanctions hearings, and violations of probation. Conducts bail hearings for felonies and misdemeanors. Filed motions to modified sentences and assisted with expungements. Lead trainings designed to educate public defenders on trans issues.

Lumberton, North Carolina

Represented clients charged with offenses ranging from traffic tickets to felonies utilizing a client-centered model. First assigned to the satellite-court circuit, which included daily independent travel and minimal access to office and courthouse resources. Then assigned to Juvenile Court, representing minors charged with both misdemeanors and felonies while maintaining an adult misdemeanor and DWI caseload. Represented clients in Superior Court charged with low and mid-level felonies. Successfully challenged two local criminal ordinances on First Amendment grounds. Conducted over seventy bench trials. Represents clients at psychiatric involuntary commitment proceedings, conducting court hearings within the hospital. Pioneered project in non-compliance court to represent clients facing jail for being unable to pay fines and court costs. Supervised paralegal intern and trained incoming Assistant Public Defenders.

Received a fellowship to attend Gideon’s Promise three-year Core-101 program which trains and mentors public defenders to transform public defense through meaningful, client-centered representation under difficult circumstances. Completed the intensive two-week Summer Institute and currently attends bi-annual training sessions. Additionally, presented “Trans* 101 for Public Defenders” at 2016 Summer Institute in Oxford, Mississippi, helping over 200 public defenders, chief public defenders, and trainers understand trans* identities and legal issues. Serves as a consultant for public defenders with trans* clients in a variety of jurisdictions on subjects including voir dire, motions practice, and jail advocacy. Provides mentorship to new Gideon’s Promise attorneys.

Researched criminal procedure issues for felony clients focusing on real time tracking and the 3rd party doctrine for searches under the 4th Amendment. Meet with client at jail to discuss investigation and case strategy. Assisted in creating discovery requests and other pretrial motions.

Researched legal issues affecting the transgender community, prepared internal memos and external publications on equal protection, due process, name change laws, employment discrimination, and prisoners’ rights. Contributed to memorandums for federal agency directors. Attended advocacy and policy meetings with non-profit organizations and governmental agencies.

Wrote briefs in support of a variety of motions. Conduct client interviews. Created a Fourth Amendment database to aid in writing briefs. Assisted in developing trial strategy. Worked with community resources to help develop culturally sensitive terms for plea bargains, including traditional Hopi notions of restorative justice.

Selected from a competitive applicant pool to teach constitutional law to high school students. Developed lesson plans covering the Bill of Rights and 14th Amendment that emphasizes public speaking and cooperative learning. Lesson goals were to ensure students understood basic legal theory and how to apply legal rights to their daily lives. Coached students for Moot Court competitions, including one student reached semi-finals of National Moot Court competition.

Researched topics including criminalization of correctional officers' sexual contact with inmates and when attorneys are mandatory reporters for sexual abuse. Created 50 State guides, one-page resource sheets, and pamphlets. Contributed the update to the best-practices guide for correctional officers and other detention staff supervising LGBTI juvenile wards and adult prisoners.
