Not too many parents would let their child rearrange the house to minimize the steps needed to get from one room to another. Yard stick in hand, I remember measuring family members stride with sticky notes as I wrote down my nonsense calculations. All to justify moving the dining room table slightly more to the left. In the age of “BIG DATA” we focus on creating models we believe solves a business ask. Only to be later disappointed with reconfigurations, shifting business priorities, and poor adoption. We put analytical resources at the beginning of our process, but fail to have contingencies for shifting resources, inconsistency in our supply chain, and time. Therein lies my passion for operational modeling and simulation. As long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with turning problems into opportunities to improve efficiency. In my current role, I optimize digital and workforce pipelines for an internal animal health practice management platform and internal performance audits and forecasts. Starting from algorithmic identification to appropriate member selection given time and capacity constraints, I create pipelines that minimize human bias while increasing delivery efficiency. This equates to more time for users and more productivity for the company. I have two Master’s degrees and I’m going for a third, I teach undergraduate statistics, and I’m quite familiar with most data science tools that are “hot” right now.
