About Allen Swerdlowe, Fellow, Faia
Allen Swerdlowe is an award wining architect and Fulbright Specialist who played significant roles in the reconstruction of the World Trade Center and the development of Brooklyn Bridge Park. He created the firm d7architects in 1987. He was recently posted in Uzbekistan by Fulbright and the State Department to consult with government, academia and business leaders on urban and sustainable issues. He has designed residential and commercial projects as well as furniture and other products. Mr. Swerdlowe was elected in 2016 to the College Fellows at the American Institute of Architects. He is on the board of several committees at the Center for Architecture in New York. These include Transportation and Infrastructure and Planning and Urban Design. Most recently he organized a panel at the Center which addressed failing infrastructure on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The discussion was subsequently broadcast on National Public radio. Early in his career he worked on historic preservation projects including Ellis Island and the reconstruction of the Delaware Aqueduct -- the earliest example of a wire rope suspension bridge designed and constructed by John Roebling 35 years prior to the Brooklyn Bridge. Swerdlowe has taught at Columbia University, Pratt Institute and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His writings include a documentary for the Discovery Channel and a screenplay dealing with an incident that took place during WW2 in preparation for the D-day invasion.
