About Pat Gunn

Unix Systems Wizard. Occasional Scientist. Interested in solving hard problems that require deep and broad knowledge of Unix, scientific literacy, or both.I'm a systems programmer - I like building software libraries, digging through layers of things down towards the operating system, thinking about databases, programming languages and bindings, and networking. I'm also happy designing infrastructure at scale. I'm no stranger to machine rooms (but I no longer want to spend time in them). I like refactoring code for clarity and beauty, and have maintained codebases with thousands of users over many years, handling everything from cleanup to handling issues caused by dependencies to deciding on code direction.I'm scientifically literate, culturally fit well into academic environments, and am experienced in supporting researchers and professors.Scientifically, I'm interested in neuroscience (specifically connectomics), microscopy and processing that happens after it,cognitive modelling (I've done MRI studies), and cell specialisation.I like mentoring people, I like to teach, I love to write, and I'm open to managing other technical people, helping them grow their skills and get things done. Check me out on Github - https://github.com/pgunn/I sometimes teach classes:1) Programming (nowadays in Python)2) Unix - into, admin, internals3) SQLIf you're approaching me, don't talk to me about markets or disruption, talk to me about why I won't be bored. On the side I am potentially open to board service, consulting or teaching. Eventually I'd like to someday be a cofounder of a company and act as CTO for it long-term

Listed skills include Perl, C, Unix, Python, and 14 others.

Site Reliability Engineer

(Big Tech Company)

Senior Software Engineer

New York City, New York, Us

I work in the Core Computing group as well as the Center for Computational Neuroscience. In my first role I support research across the Flatiron Institute (software and infrastructure aspects). In my second, I do programming, design software infrastructure, and join in research on connectomics, working on the species Megaphragma viggianii. In my third role, I do software maintenance (code improvements, CI, docs, testing) on an opensource calcium imaging project called CaImAn (see Githib). My work in this role encompasses a wide variety of responsibilities and sees me working with a lot of software on AWS as well as our clusters

We had full responsibility for many systems (such as our Jira install) and OS-to-configuration-management responsibility for many other systems (Chef). I wrote a fair amount of code to handle scaling problems with available tools, debugged code, handled operational concerns, and liased with other teams while documenting and developing best practices (e.g. "how do we deploy software"). After hours I had side projects for other teams in the company, where I wrote a diagnostic tool for our support team and contributed code for one of our storage engines (WiredTiger) and assisted with competitive analysis documents relating to other databases I have expertise in. This research was published in peer-reviewed journals.I was also responsible for the cluster on which we performed the experiments, evaluating and maintaining software on those systems and training people in their use.
